Hi fellas,

I own a 97 SWB Vitara JX and I got by belts replaced yesterday by a mechanic because they were squealing like a mo-fo.

Anyway, new belts on and there is a slight squeal at lowish revs (<3500rpm). A/C squeals briefly when you turn it on.

I only bought the car about 6 weeks ago and it wasn't squealing then.

Now, I took the car to the mechanic this morning and he said the pulleys are very shiny. I asked the mechanic about possibly getting new pulleys. He said that they probably don't make them new anymore or hard to get. Is that true?

Would a set from the wreckers be sufficient? Or are there new ones available?

I think you need a mechanic who can adjust the belt tension properly...

Usually put the belt on, tighten and check for a certain amount of deflection with a given force.

He is going to try to tension up the belts again today and see how that goes.

Yes its lubricant..but it works.

Just had a chat to the mechanic and he says that the mob that installed the A/C has installed the compressor a little off square and that's why the belt squeals.

I'll give them a call to see if they can fabricate a new bottom bracket.

My belts started squealing on start-up a few months after I bought it. It goes away after a few seconds so I just cope with it.

Where'd you get the AC done? Can I ask how much?

A/C was installed when I bought the car.

Tell em to tighten the belt, thay have to be tight, more than any other car I've ever put a spanner to.

Anyone with a G16B with AC mind taking a photo of the belt and pulley that drives the AC compressor for me?

Mate, i got a/c and its 1.6l. i think i have a photo somewhere of it if not ill get one and put it up when i can.

u can have/buy mine if you really really want, i have had it for about 2 yrs and used about 5 times lol.

My 97 is still the old shape. So, 1.6L for me.

Here's a pic of my a/c belt & pulley. Note, that the unit is aftermarket and not standard vitara.

To my eyes that does look a bit off centre. Could be a camera angle thing.
It also looks like some spacers/washers under bolts would bring it out more square??

That's where I mounted my power steering pump. On my G16A if I remember correctly the front and back mounting faces (bolt holes on block) aren't in the same plane. If they've run a straight flat mount and bolted it to the front and back bolt holes that would kick it out of square. I would have expected it to be worse than that though.

Any chance of a slightly wider shot to include the pulley that drives the belt (the one just on the right edge of that photo)?

Oh, and shandy92 - I've got all the parts except the drive belt, just need to suss out exactly what is already in the engine bay and what I'll need to source. Thanks anyway!

looks like it needs to come forward a groove, also looks like the adjuster is as far as it goes and should be a size smaller belt to get more tension

At first, be put a smaller belt in there. They he swapped it out for the bigger one. What I might do, is ask him to put the smaller one back on so he can tension it up a bit better.

If it not straight, is there any reason belt can't be moved one v outwaRDS, PLENTY OF GROOVES SPARE?

sorry i havnt got a pic, but mine looks exactly the same as that. mines aftermarket as well, and mine is not square. mine used to squeal but i just tightened it really tight...and it stopped. i think mine is slightly more off sqaure that urs tho. not much u can do about it but just make it really tight.

Its not square cause there is no rear mount so its flexing out, ill get a pic of mine, its heaps beefier

im pretty sure mine has a rear mount, ill go have a look in a sec. mine is about 10mm steel so its pretty beefed up

Royce, your bracket looks heaps better. Is yours the stock Suzuki one or a custom? How do you adjust it?

Aftermarket, made by a mob called TRX automotive I think, dont ring them though cause they dont make em anymore I got the last one

to the left of the AC pulley youll see a bolt head and a little pulley, it moves up and down to tension the belt

I have another bracket here for the same compressor but to suit no AC I would part with for the right money
