G'day guys,

I picked up some axles that have birfield rings on them - How much grinding is required to make them fit?

Also, the large nut on the hub, does it have to be a deep socket to undo it, or will a regular depth socket do?

Having never swapped a front centre or pulled apart hubs etc, is there anything in particular to watch out for?

I use a standard 50mm socket to undo those nuts in the hubs...
Don't know about the grinding as I have never had birfield rings.. I run CrMo axles..

Tip: Do one side at a time so if you stuff up you can look at the other side...

if you arent planning on servicing or adjsuting the bearings you dont need to touch that nut

I run birfields, you need to grind off an area about the size of a five cent piece in 4 spots(corners) of the nuckle to about a depth of maybe 0.5mm to 1mm. basicly your removing a casting/forging mark in the corners.
The best way I found to make sure you get the right spot is clean out the nuckle and spray a marking paint in there fit the cv and move it around inside the nuckle and look for the scuff marks if you have a die grinder it will take five minutes a side make sure you get all the metal out and stuff a rag in the akle seal. spider tracks birfeilds come with instructions to show you where to grind as well.
If you need I'll have a look and see if I can find them if you like.

My question being, do these really work? will it stand up to 33s and welded front diff?
