Hey Guys,

Not sure exactly what these are called but I pulled off the wheel, the hubs, the lower ball joint I think, the tie rod and the shock then removed the whole discbrake and wheel bearing etc, any way....

On the side that the CV goes through the ... bit, it's broken see pics for more info and detailed description seeing as I don't know the names of anything heh.

I'm quite mechanicaly minded so please don't tell me off for not knowing the names of things hehe

Nope, that look right, thay have a split in em for easy of fitment, that one look's a lil worn but fine to use..

are you chasing a problem or just looking??

I'm chasing a problem and hoping to fix it.

I suspect the wheel bearing might need to be changed but after pulling this apart it looks as though it might be something different.

Basically there are 2 symptoms;

1: around 100kph around bends I get noise from the front end like as if my wheel nuts are loose or there's to much play somewhere.

2: when I remove my hub on the drivers side I can grab the end of the CV and move it about 1mm up and down but on the passenger side it has very little play.

My thoughts were wheels bearing but I'm not sure. when I just spun the disc brake while it was all off there wasn't any grinding noise or anything to suggest the bearing was dieing so I'm now a little lost.

As mentioned, this is not broken, but could be worn. The proper name for it is a Spindle Bush and it's made from a square sheet of sintered bronze that is rolled and formed into shape. It has the groove and triangular cutout as that's the shape the sheet ends up when curved around and a shoulder formed on it.

Try using each of the CV's in each bush by hand and see if there is excessive play. You mentioned that the driver's side seems to move more than the passenger's side. If it is excessively worn, you can replace it by driving it out of the spindle with a hammer and drift punch. Make sure you thoroughly re-grease the new replacement.

Genuine Part No 43445-60A00 for SWB Vit, or 43445-60A10 for LWB vit.

That's great info thanks heaps I'll look into it. How bad is it to drive on? I wanted to go to stockton tomorrow.

Although you're talking about the IFS of a Vit front end, the Leafy Sierra has exactly the same arrangement inside the Spindle and the Bush can, over time, become worn and need replacement.

Part numbers are:
SJ40 (1.0 Sierra): 43445-80012
SJ50 (1.3 NT and early WT): 43445-80012
SJ70 (late WT) 43445-60A10
SJ80 (Coily): 43445-60A11

Any or all of those numbers might have been superseded, so check when ordering (60A10/11 seems to be the latest version of the bush??)

And only use Lithium/Moly Grease (grey metallic stuff), not regular wheel bearing lube.

Meh, go to Stockton and put up with the noise for the weekend. It won't catastrophically fail and rip off your front wheel, but do change it fairly soonish if it need's doing. If you grease it up well when putting it back together, at least you won't do any damage to the CV.

From what I can think of though this doesn't really explain the noise when driving highway bends, any idea what that could be?
