A mate is looking to get something better for camping than his current Falcon sedan. He asked me what I thought of the Ford Territory. He told him to buy shares in BP 
Anyway, he's looking for advice, and being biased towards a Suzuki (and my Land Rover Defender) I was wondering how capable the current shape GV is.
Anyone care to comment?

I have a 2009 ddis GV and its fantastic on road dirt roads etc, I'm to scared to take it fully offroad into hard shit but I can say the traction control is pretty good on it. I recon you could put it on its side before the traction runs out but the ground clearance is very average. great on fuel

Depends on what he intends on using it for apart from getting to the camp site. If he wants to use it for offroad then I would recommend the Jimny. The GV's offroad capability in stock form is very limited due to clearance issues. He would have to spend some money modifying it to get it to be moderately capable as the Jimny.

Mostly just dirt roads, perhaps some beach work, which would be a bit of an issue with lack of clearance. He as a bub, so would definitely need a 4 door.
I would prefer he bought something with a proper transfer case etc. A new Wrangler would be OK, but not sure if he would find one for the money.

take a look at the kia sorrento - my boss's one is pretty decent.. his is the turbo diesel one (09 model) - it spins 3rd gear going around corners =P lol

Perhaps he should look into an Xtrail or similar. They're suitable for a growing family and comfortable to drive.

kia sorrento is a decent number with more power than the gv in standard petrol form. I loved the gv (2door) and brought that.

ok, that would rule out plenty of the newer SUV. The GV is one of the few that have retain a low range transfer case.
The new wrangler to be release mid next year would be a good buy. It has a new dash, seats and proper doors. It would be worth the wait. However I'm not sure if there is a price hike.

the jks aint that bad on fuel now they have the v6 fly by wire etc. plus theres the option of a diesel.

Ive got a stock standard 08 model 4 cyl and have almost no issues with it. Took it to LCMP (green tracks only) and on the beach at stradbroke and didn't have to many issues. I got stuck on the beach once but it was the first time i ever drove on sand, first gear=wheel spin=dug in. But done it many othertimes since and had no problems. Did better than my brothers pajero  The rest of the guys are right needs more clearance and it would be fine.

I beg to differ... We have one and the best fuel consumption we get is 12L per 100km. That's gentle highway driving too. At Fraser, in spots, that went over 20L per 100km. The fly by wire throttle in them is the worst thing ever put on an engine. It's really lagging, to the point that gear changes often require pre-emptive throttle application. If anyone intends getting one, Google this. Negatives aside, with their live axles, power, price and tow capacity they are the only thing in the market that fills the segment that they do.
