Hey all, Have had a serch but can't get an anser for my actual question so I thaughy I may as well ask. Want to put 31s... Possibly 33s down the track on my Sierra 1.3 carby. I know that ideal diff and tcase should be done but don't have the coin this close to Xmas. I can however get transfer gears.. What would be the best way to go? Saw a link to a site that can supply 6.4:1, 4.9:1, or 4.16:1 i want something that will be good offroad as that's why I got the car. But I do have to drive to where I am going so can't make highway driving impossible. From what I have read on here it seems 4.16:1 is the way to go? Any info would be appreciated.

4.16 gears will not be low enough for road driving with 31s.

i have 4.9s and they are great for 31s,

unless your bigger than 31s 5.1 or 6.5s will be really too low for on road.

my vote is for 4.9s

31's with 6.5's seems to be the favourite recipie. Plus 6.5's are cheaper

i have 6.5s and 4.8 diff gears in my other car and its still not low enough on road

I don't know anyone that bought 4:1 gears that doesn't want 6:1 gears.

I think 6:5:1 are way too low if you are running under 33's

We have a few guys in the club in Vic who run 6.5's and 31's and they are happy. Yes, they are low off road. They are also spot on on road. It's not a bad outcome.

I'd rather be a bit too low geared offroad than a bit too tall geared.

im very happy with my 5.14's... off and on road theyre great, from what i've seen 6.5's and 31s is just a touch too low for road and offroad. 6.5's would be bang on for 33's though.

I have 5.14 Calmini's, have had them since about 2005 or so. Thrashed the shit out of them and still fine. Having driven a fair few different gearing setups, i would prefer the 6.5's as sometimes i would like just a bit more reduction without having to resort the using low 1st all the time. I run 33's or 32's, but pretty much only drive rocks so low wheel speed and control are more desired.

If thats as big as you will ever go then 4.9's or 5.14's.

don't forget SA hasn't got a lot of mega low range terrain, at least I haven't found anything too hardcore & you don't want to go to low as beach work will be a bitch.
