after searching the forums for a while i couldnt find a solid answer so im asking every one.
i would love ARB air lockers all round but lets be realistic for a minute i dont have shares in ARB and they are pirates.
i want to know a good compromise between brands and front only, rear only, mix and match lockers F+R?

also what type of lockers are of good quality?

i really think you should have left out the "all or nothing" option, id love to know if, assuming you had money for ONE airlocker, which one people would reccomend... i know sierra's have bugger all weight across the back so front would make more sense, but having driven my cousins twin locked SWB cruiser, rear all the way for me. for my driving style, i preferred the feel of the rear locker vs the front locker (did some dirt/mud with just the front locked, then just the rear)... really it comes down to personal opinion.

yes, i know a cruiser cant really be compared to a sierra since sierras are real 4wds, but its all i have to go on...

How do you use your car now?

For a mildly modified road driven car that sees lots of road use I'd say airlocker rear, open front is OK.

If it's more of an offroad car, spool or auto lock the rear and airlock the front.

I'm spooled rear/airlocker front and think it's a pretty good outcome. I'd fit a rear locker before a front if I had to have one (although there is some merit in the opposite approach - i.e front locker first, it's harder on the front axles), but depending on what you drive and who you drive with, the moment you have one you'll want the other one.

i just bought an 88 sierra tin top so i will keep the vitara prety stock (to an extent) so the sierra will be my bush bitch and get spoiled like a sweet 16 barely legal weapon

in my local area i drive bush beach and after rain i have a fav mud run.

My plan is togo twin locked down the track. But as im a poor prick, im going rear first. Simply because i didnt want to track down 26 spline axels n stuff for the front... I just picked up a lockright for $230 to my door from low range, cant complain with that. Will go air locker for the front eventually.

im running an auto locker in the rear, bit of a pain on the road but u get used to it and drive differently.
would love and auto locker in the front but ill be upgrading the axles and cvs to 26 spline first.

I've recently put a Spartan auto locker in the rear of my sierra, I've never driven a car with lockers before so it is a new experience for me. So far I can't fault it, love my rear locker, no idea what one would be like in the front tho. My only gripe is that it clunks and bangs at car park speeds on sealed road, but this is normal for an auto locker and not as bad as a lockrite from what I've been told.

i went rear only... if i had a front in mine i'd be able to drive almost anything i pointed it at, and where would the fun be in that?

the fun in having F&R air lockers is being able to turn them on when needed & out driving land couches.

Im now twin Arb air locked. Let me explain....

Its a sierra BTW
1st I decided:
Auto locker rear and nothing front.
Auto locker started to malfunction after about my 3rd trip offrd, so it got replaced under warranty. It was just plain rude on the road too.

2nd
put an air locker in the front
wow big improvement and totally controllable
Autolocker in rear failed again.

3rd
pissed the rear autolocker off
installed the air locker in rear
note to self (should have just done this from the begining)

IMO
start with a rear air locker then se how you go and get the front later on.
BTW my front is 26 spline with the chrome molly axles
This seems expensive on a sierra but the way I justify it to myse4lf is to say at least I am not trashin my Patrol anymore! lol

i agree - however i already drive everywhere offroad with the rear locker on "because i can"... now and then i attempt a hill without them but obviously i have to hit the hill harder than i would with it on, so more risk of damage.

i would still love to have a front locker (with cv and axle upgrade) - but for cost vs. fun i'm happy with rear only right now.

It's probably not set up correctly. Mine has been in for years and hardly ever makes any noise.

I'm spooled rear and autolocker front.
I've also run with auto front and open rear after killing a pinion.

My swb was welded f+r.

I'd ALWAYS go rear first. I can't even notice a difference in driving onroad with the minispool (confirmed after it was removed).

I'll be changing to an airlocker in the front eventually as the auto can be a bit of a pig at times.

its been out and shimmed 3 times... its SLIGHTLY better..
