So after 25 years the outboard on our boat finally packed up, well it threw part of a conrod though the block with a hell of a bang.

So we are looking at stuff above 130 hp prolly bigger leaning towards the evirude etec 2 strokes prolly 150 hp or so. But have heard some good stuff bout the new honda 4 strokes.

what do people think? and what do people use?

i have a yamaha F100hp and it is awesome. it uses 1.7 liters a hour at a
barra trolling speed and i can travel over 200km on 80ltr of fuel. it is also very
quite.
the suzuki four stroke's are apparently very good as well.
on elcho there would be around 50 boats with at least 40 of them being yamaha's
2 stroke's belong on racing vehicles and lawnmowers.
google etec and read about the dramas.

i know nothing about outboards & boats, but i think you should fit the biggest one possible that has the most power....

I have had a lot to do with the e-tec and optimax. I've compared them quite a bit with 4 strokes. I don't think I'll ever go back to a heavy anchor. But if you looking at a 150hp 4 stroke I would be considering looking at a 120hp optimax or e-tec. And they so much lighter.

i agree about the power part and i put it here because last time i posted something that i wanted serious advice on in chat all i got was smart arse remarks for the most part.

My old man has a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke. Awesome motor, and real quiet. Once you've run a 4 stroke you'll never go back to 2 stroke.

Oh and shep, 2 strokes belong on LJ's too!

dad was lookin into getting a new motor for his boat and he is going to get a 4stroke suzuki (only a 70 tho). the 4 strokes are a bit more up front to buy but you would end up saving money becasue they use alot less fuel.

the zooks come with 5 year warranty (i think) and they seem to be pretty reliable from everybody dad has talked to.

one more thing. the 4strokes use less fuel and oil, also the oil that the etecs need is very expensive. i do a full service on mine with genuine oil/filter and impeller
plus plugs and gear oil and get change from $150

i went for a bit of a trip today, around 130km with a mix of open ocean and river
and the last 10km i towed a broken boat.
my tank is 80ltr, so i used less then 40ltr. 4 strokes are awesome.

seagull, that's one of those "put put" little jiggers that would run on just about anything including coconut oil??? my old boy had one of those on a clinker style displacement hull that was as old as...

my family has a 17 1/2 bullet i ski at 63M/ph and has the balls to pull 2 sinlge skiiers out no problems its a yamaha 150hp 2005 model v6

Anything jap is good- honda, suzuki and yamaha are the ones I would go for.

I have a mercury 135hp 4 stroke atm and the last boat had a johnson 40 2 stroke and Ive never had any problems with them.
Just depends what they are going for these days, not cheap Im guessing! Good luck

Ok a little background. I am a third year apprentice Marine Mechanic working at an Evinrude E-tec dealership, we have owned boats all my life and before working at this dealer i was a yamaha man through and through. In referance to the OP's post i say this, The fuel economy advantage in terms of HP for HP leans in the 4 strokes favour at cruising speed, however up to about 2400rpm the e-tec is up to 48% more efficient than a 4 stroke. Overall in terms of fuel economy the four stroke is a little better though. But the real kicker is this, with a 2 stroke you dont need as big a motor PERIOD. The holeshot you can achieve with for instance a 130hp 2 stroke is equal to that of a 200hp 4 stroke on the same boat and the 2 stroke is about 55kgs lighter.

A friend of mine has an old school 4.5m wooden ski boat with a 'slightly' worked 350chev in it, goes quite fast to say the least and
uses a sh!t load of fuel.
