I agree with your comments on the Uni. But others have great success with them. But its rare that you hear a bad word about Lincolns
OP buy Michaels SP180. I have one and they are great!

I think there are 2 sizes. My SP180 has a small torch, but my 255 has a full size Binzel torch.

the BOC stuff is made by kempi (i think) and have a great warranty.
just see what you can buy locally from a proper shop, not bunnings and the
like, and make sure that spares and consumables are available.

I used a few different 355 WIA machines over a 2 year period and didn't like any of them They were all 3phase units

$1000 doesnt buy much of anything good in the way of migs unfortunately
I'd be looking for a good used unimig , kenpi, wia lincon or esab about 180-250 amps.
put a new torch on and live happily ever after

Funny you should say that
I took my lincon 255 in for a "service" because I though after 3 years of hammering the arse out of it, I should get it checked over. The guy at the service/ repair centre looked at me real funny, then opened the cover and blew the dust out with an air gun. Then he told me to piss off and come back in 15yrs when it it had a REAL dust build up

^^^^^^ thats the currect model. I was quotes $1000 + gst for a new one today. They have the Magnum 100 handpiece which is not upgradable to Euro unfortunately. But it would suit the light fabricator very well. Great machine!!

For the money, you'll find no better mig than a lincoln 180c.
I've seen them effortlessly run spool after spool of wire and never miss a beat.
They're bulletproof and proven performers.
Without raising (doubling) your budget, you won't find a more capable machine.

I have one of these https://www.alltools.com.au/shop/index. ... ngle_Phase
runs on 15amp power point - penetrates 3mm mild steel easily. I've welded 6mm steel and still get a good joint. I paid $500 about 2 years ago and never had any problems. I only use it occasionally and its great for light-medium work

we have 4 255amp wia that run on 15amp and one 355 3 phase machine
also had 2 uni migs now down to one and we have a jasic 250amp inverter.
also not a fan of the wia either i prefer a renegade over them.
