yup - i was careful to only hit them front on in case side on bent it =)
i just did an idling test in the driveway and it took a lot longer to get warm, given its 36 outside an in the sun i took that as a good sign... so hopped in and started revving it etc and managed to get the temp up high still.
i'll take it down the highway tomorrow and see if the high speed temp thing still happens.

ok highway test just done - outside temp is 36.7 (at 5pm!)
still heated up just the same - it doesnt go past a certain point, but definitely runs hotter than if doing 60km/hr.
i also did a run at 90km/hr with the bonnet latch popped, so the front of the bonnet was up a bit more jamming more air in the front - this made no difference.
while the engine was warm still i turned on the thermo, after a minute or two it brought the temp down to half way between "normal" and my hot point. i also felt around the engine bay - the pipes are super crazy hot, but so is the engine block (of course) right next to the radiator.
can i please get more info on the vitara engine fan swap? apparently the one that fits in the sierra shroud still?

Borrow an infrared or contact thermometer from someone. Your idea of superhot, and your engines idea of super hot may be 2 different things.

The guage on the dash should only be used as a guide. There are no increments, so you have no way to tell if 1mm on the gause is 1 degree or 10. An accurate contact thrmometer will give you a much better indication of whats going on.

lol that fan looks super wonky! haha what an odd design.
normally my temp guage read just under 1/3rd - so about a needle width above parrallel with the / line on the bottom of the temp guage - at its "hot" point it reads about a needle width below half way.
is it worth fitting one of these: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... 48#details
so i can see what the temp really is? perhaps the elecric sender on the dash is sensing only a 5 degrees difference and its showing up as a large variation on the needle?

if the temp sender is anything like my fuel sender i still dont trust any movement from the norm!
i think i'll chuck in a temp guage so i have a number to go by before doing anything else.
what a good range to be in with water temp? i assume around 80-90*C?

assuming your guage/sender is correct, a 1/3 is probably not even hot enough really. most modern cars run around a half to 2/3rds.
you need to check what temp its really running at not just assume its hot cold or right.
Ask stecky but 80-90 degc is probably close to the correct operating temp.
I'm pretty sure on vs commodores it 90-115 deg c
what temp does a sierra thermostat open at? It must be at least 10 deg above that

dont bother stuffing around with stock fans and shrouds, i can guarantee you that if you fit the same thermo as me ($65 mates rates) your probs will go away provided your radiator and thermostat arnt rooted, you need the 82* thermostat mine ran uber hot with the 88 one in.

Jap import engines can often have very "cold" thermostats that open around 70*C. which is cold enough to kill a motor here in Aus.
Most Sierras have an 82 or 88 thermostat, depending on climate.
No idea whgat a Vit has

Bwahahahahaha so your shit is awesome, but only if you have the wrong too cold thermostat in it, in which case it will be shit
1.6 is a 92 degree thermostat

yeah maybe he should fit your wonky vitara fan and worry about it when the temp gets over 3/4, that sounds like a much better idea

thermo,s are puss on 4x4's
as long as you motor is still spinning so is you factory fan!
they are the best option by miles in terms of reliability, and cooling performance they dony rely on fuses , relays, wiring cable tie things coming loose mud or sticks jambing them up.
stick with you engine fan they are WAY good enough to cool 1.6 litres of motor if its set up right

i was told 82 degree's, thats what i run in mine and it sits just above the 1/3rd mark. i guess im like alien, if it starts to rise above the normal i start to wonder, almost paranoid. i have been wanting to fit a proper gauge for ages.
so besides supercheap, where can we get proper and accurate gauges from?
Mitch
ps- im not hijacking, just getting the same info.

JMHO cheap gauges have caused more problems on outback moking trips, than anyone with no after market gauges fitted.
Inaccurate readings give unneeded worry, or kill an engine, both uncool.
Oil pressure gauges that run oil up to the gauge have often popped, and sprayed car and driver with hot oil, not nice.
Saying that, I have no idea which gauges are reliable.

I've probably missed it :S but what shrouding do you have on the radiator, and do you still have the splash gaurd bolted on at the front of the motor/under the radiator?

no worries shakes - yeh its the standard sierra shroud & fan, and the deflector is still under the radiator.

well i got a guage from auto-one - can't seem to get the autometer or VDO.
anyway - got home and went to start fitting it when i had a sudden "bugger" moment - the only outlet on my thermostat housing is connected to a sensor! so the only way i'll be able to run the gauge is if i disconnect that - which i assume is going to upset the computer.
