I couldn't build one of those out of cardboard let alone welding and salvaging parts and shit.

I left mine open, but I had to. Its hot dip galvanised.

Yeah thats the thing. I know i could probably get away with it. I triple check everything when i work with timber, but there are too many things getting in the way at the moment (room, money, the missus).

I will definitely do it in a few years though when i am all sorted. Whats the harm in collecting some of the parts i need early.

Christover, your hitch. Bought/made?? Rubber/poly bush in there somewhere or a metal to metal fit.

While where at it, are there and laws reguarding making your own hitch. Can/can't/shouldn't???

Hitch came from Ebay, sold by a firm in Bayswater Vic, forgot name.
There is a hard bush that pin goes thru, and greasable bearings in the tube bit. It has been no trouble since I put it on.
It was quite a lot cheaper than the treg couplings, but of course you get what you pay for.

In the next few months I plan to build a trailer from the ground up to suit the little jimny.
will be doing this with the help of my older brother. he's a boilermaker and has built a few trailers b4. He built a really nice one for himself a few years ago.
he's not an expert in trailer building though and there is a lot we need to nut out b4 we start anything.

plan is to make a small off-road trailer.
same width as the jimny.
around 5x3 (measured it today might be more like 5x3.5)
would like to put eye to eye leafs in it. don' like the idea of a slipper.
would like the sides to be fairly deep.
and would be good to keep it light!
I think this will be the hard part. trying to made it nice and solid but keeping it light at the same time.

if I end up with something like the pic below (minus the rooftop tent) i will be over the moon!

don't want them to be too stiff in such a small trailer

This is my 5 x 3.5 with high sides.






Weighs about 170kg inc tyres etc but without rooftop tent. And its hot dip Galv also, so that adds some weight too.

back half of a sierra fully loaded has to be good for 500kg

If its too soft, add a leaf, if its too stiff, remove 1

Sierra leafs should be fine, if too soft or too hard, remove/add a leaf. Plenty of stock fronts around with everyone doing Ruff ruff.

Well the legal payload od a sierra is about 400kg. Add that to the 400 they are already supporting and its not looking too bad. But have you ever seen a sierra with 400kg in the back? Its not pretty.

I'd guess they'd be good for 600kg to be safe. So a light zook trailer with all your camping gear in the back will be fine. And should be enough weight to get the springs working too. My springs are 1.5t slippers, and they suck ass. The trailer is in the air more than its on the ground.

yeah i had looked at off the shelf leafs for trailers and they were all rated super high and i guessed they would be really firm.

forgot you can tune a leaf pack. never owned a leaf sprung car...

As soon as I get back from Honk Kong next month I am starting my own trailer build project.

I just rang Papas Trailers and am going to order a 7x4 trailer with 500mm depth and a side swing gate - around $1,900 for a HD one with some other mods.

Then I am buying an OzTrail canvas top.

All up I hope to get it done for around $5,500

I'll also be looking at fitting a custom kitcken onto the swing gate.

The other question is whether it needs to be a braked trailed which is another $600.

This will be towed behind our 07 GV so weight isn't really an issue.

CAN'T WAIT as I have wanted a camper trailer for years, but cannot justify the price of complete kits.

the lightest load rating I could get, then removed a few leaves.
