Word up AZ, the last couple of night's pulling up to open the gates at home I've got that slight whiff of warm coolant, I know that smell well coming from a headwarping pootrol...

Anyway had a look around this morning & couldn't see any stains from major leaks, fired it up & let it get warm & I could smell coolant, poked around & noticed the join between the coolant pipe & the rear coolant housing. It looks like it's a press fit with an "O" ring or sealant.

I've had a look as the FSM & it doesn't really tell me much, does anyone know how it's held together & what it the best way to get it resealed?

drain the water and see whats actually in there?

the g16 has an o ring si i would suspect the j20 is similar. shouldnt be too hard to get one and fix it right up

I plan on doing that, but gotta go to work shortly...

Was hoping to get the parts if any are required before pulling anything apart as I have a Suzuki Dealer that's one the way to work & are good with spare parts.

Looks like an o-ring seal. All G motors have these at the pump. And the little bolt just helps hold it there. Should be very simple to replace.

swung past suzuki in the city on the way to work, it's an O-ring seal... got one coming in along with a new thermostat.

the O-ring that's leaking is #2 in the circled area.

I think might replace mine before I put the J20a into my sierra.

Did the seal and Oring cost much?

Anything else that you see as a weakness on J20's?

NFI on the price, has to come out of the Melbourne whorehouse... can't see it being that much, will post price & part number when i get it.


coil pack probes would be the #1 weakness & the o2 Sensor are the only things that have failed & have been replaced on the motor in the 4+ years i've had it.

one thing i've kept a close eye on is the plastic thermostat housing, but it seems to be holding up quite well considering it's nearly 14 years old, i've got a new thermostat coming so i'll have a good look at the inside when it's off.

I have seen the end's of coolant pipe's corrode off eng side of the O'ring, just letting you know..

Mr Knife, hopefully it's not corroded.... the last time I dumped & flushed the coolant I took the top hose off the off the coolant pipe & it looked pretty clean.

Is there any sealant required to go with the O-ring?

No, just the ring, normally if you try to use 3 bond or the like's it will leak, just a bit of rubber grease or Vaseline to aid it's journey home..

Check that pipe 22 in the diagram has a small bypass hose off it that is not showen in the picture if your not convinced of the top pipe. Ive had several of the hoses weap. Nearly impossible to see without a mirror. Real pain to replace the hose aswell so lets hope not, just something I know to check whenever im told of a smell on J20

I had a good look at that other pipe today using a mirror & it's definitely leaking from the join on the top coolant pipe, you can see the dark spots on the join where it's weeping.

just waiting for the thermostat to come in, some how the order got separated.

so it turns out that what was once a great source of info & parts has now gone to shit now that their spare parts guy has moved on... got Suzuki in the City to order in the O-Ring & a thermostat, the O-Ring arrived the other day, went to pick up the thermostat today & the clowns had ordered in a radiator cap FFS.

yep, it's not that hard to keep a clean engine bay clean.

apart from a few mud stains in hard to reach places it's pretty much as clean as the day i got it, although those pics have shown me a few spots that i've missed.

IMO there is nothing worse than trying to see a leak when everything is covered in crap or working on a crusty, greasy & dirty engine, if it went to a mechanic i'm sure they'd appreciate not getting covered in shit & probably would put a bit more of an effort in knowing that it's been looked after, rather than just another greasy shitter that needs patching up.

Plus SA is a bit like WA, we don't see a lot of mud.

all fixed.

did a full flush, coolant change, new thermostat & radiator cap.



there was more corrosion at the radiator hose end than at the back of the block, infact the end that was leaking was pretty much spotless.




radiator hose end.


O-ring end, the o ring looked to be in reasonable condition. eg not perished or cracked.




Plastic thermostat housing FTW, 14 years old & not a spot of corrosion.






old thermostat with dangly bit, it was a bit crusty but has be put aside in the trackside repair kit.


new thermostat without dangly bit, thanks to Stekky for the inside info... it bleed like an 18yo virgin




hole all cleaned ready for new O-ring




all done, no more leaks.

You must be like a sniffer dog to smell that little coolant being lost . In you first pics I couldn't even see where it was leaking until you marked it .

I had a small leak in a similar pipe on my Feroza , but I didn't smell it I saw the little green crusty residue where coolant had seeped from a crack .
I just replaced the whole pipe .

i hadn't finished in that last photo... you'll see that it's also missing the bolt that holds the coolant pipe to the back of the head.

after owning a TB42 GQ Patrol that was a professional at head warping/cracking... the smell of hot coolant is scent of $$$$'s about to be burnt.

a feroza hey, i wouldn't have bothered fixing it.
