Hilift jacks suck.

They are only a safe means of lifting the vehicle if the axle is strapped to the chassis to prevent it drooping. Under those circumstances, they are quite effective - but picking up the body until the suspension fully droops before the wheel comes off the ground is daft.

but the problem there is only in how you're using it.

guns and highlift jacks don't kill people, people kill people :D

But have you seen anyone strap an axle up to the chassis before lifting with a hilift?

Royce, your point is sound, but it's rarely worth the effort in our experience. A quick snatch backwards, then track build as appropriate seems to be more effective.

I've jacked off a beadlocked rim with a hilift, and it was quite effective. I just can't see much point in doing it as a normal recovery procedure. It's pretty longwinded.

If you were into remote travel by yourself (problem #1) and were stuck in ruts where there was no winch point handy, I'd much rather be using an exhaust jack than a deathstick.

PS ever noticed how many cars you see with hilifts on them with absolutely nothing to use them on? Stock bumpers, an alloy bullbar and no side rails? Kinda like the maller with roof lights, I wonder how often they get used?

Steve.

Get a hand winch.

I think there may have been a couple of times Ive wheeled with you that you'd take that statement back
its pretty hard to drive and hand winch at the same time.

i do a fair bit of stuff on my own and the trick is to not take chances. if it looks a bit dodgy then find another way.

that's what i do, no point of getting stuck if there is no one to help. i know that i should go with someone, but so far i've done a lot of touring around sydeny just my car only. easy driving. i've done one hard track by myself, but i know it well, know what i can drive and what my car is capable. anything hard i turn around or use chicken track if available. if one more car is driving with me, than there is a different story.

I use my high lift all the time But I have cut "T" into my bulbar and have strong rock sliders.
I wouldn't try and change a rear tire with a highlift but I probably try a front.

a capstan is a good alternative to a electric winch, they can ahndle salt water, and there is plenty laying around at mission beach area.

An interesting idea... do you happen to know their load rating ?

I assume the load rating would depend on the size of the capstan, the strenth of the line would be the main thing.I got a couple of old yatch lines that i havv't been able to break yet.
there's a capstan at the local dump shop, and some guy out there suggested it would make a good car winch, but it's not working and i've never seeninside one, and don't know if they can be repaired.
The ones on the super yatchs would have to handle 20 or 30 tonnes.
bye

I've used mine a few times to recover vehicles when I didn't have a winch , or my handwinch on board , I wouldn't go out anywhere without it.

As already stated ' you need positions for lifting the vehicle safely , and there are some situations which are too danderous to use them without taking some sort of precautions.

When used safely they are great asset to have in your bag of recovery tricks.

Acouple of things are that when being used for winching you should have the winching kit ' also you have limited movement on the the jack so using any type of stetchable material wont' work when winching , snatch straps and winch straps usually use up all the movement on the jack so are useless. Drag chains are the best as they are adjustable , so most of the slack can be removed to allow for the most movement whilst winching. A dampener should also be thrown over the chain to avoid damage if it lets go , a towel jacket or winching dampener can be used.

If you do buy one , buy a good quality brand , and mount it securely to your vehicle , you want one of those loose inside the 4wd during a mishap.

I also have a handwinch which usually travels as well , this has saved us so many times where a electric winch was useless. These are also heavy and should be mounted safely inside your vehicle. They are hard yakka and you must have the extended handle whilst winching to make it easier. You should also have a dampener fitted whilst using the hand winch to avoid whipping of the cable if it lets go, mine is mounted to the new ownersswing away tyre mount.

Cheers Paul.

Cool, so how long did it take you to get out using the hand winch ?

thanks Paul, nice sierra, i like your fenders. i could use my swing away, but i would need to use trailer, or stub axle with bearing instead of my current simple setup.

what was easier for you (labour, set up) to use, hand winch or using high lift as a winch?

i probably will buy a winching kit (shackles, tree protector, winch extension snatch block - ) and winch/hand puller (chip 4 ton ebay one) for those situation when you need gentle push or pull. i know that it possibly want save me when i'll be really stuck. i might get a 5m long drag chain too.
i still think about high lift jack with tyre kit but for lifting not winching.

I tried using a 3T cumalong to get a 10 T truck out. I was screwed after 20 minutes and the truck was still stuck. It got it out eventually BUT only after I dug away the ground allowing the wheels to come up nicely.

Like Royce said get a high lift, a shovel and a winch.

Scenario 1# using high lift as winch
Youu are winching away and then all of a sudden you need to lift the car to get over a rock, tree etc.

What do you do then???
If you had two then you may winch and and lift the car but NOBODY carries two high lifts.

I would go a tirfor type over anything else (in hand winches)

All three are good, but limited. Together all three are fantastic

Remember high lifts are good to as you can lift the car from the front and then push it sideways letting the jack fall. Rough but will get you out of a jam somtimes. had to do this when I was hung up on some tree stumps as they were hitting the pumpkins. Just move the car sideways a bit and drove out

Hand winch is hard work, so very hard. So much more flexible than a electric though.
Got irretreivably bogged once in the old zook, a dam that had been filled in, had a thin crust, then endless mud underneath. I had to wind the window up to stop the mud coming in, and dig a hole to get to a tow point. The hand winch pulled it out, had a guy standing on the bonnet shoveling the mud off it.
Pulled it 7 or 8 metres, left a canal behind it. The trailer stayed on the back, but some of the firewood floated out.
Hours and hours. Dirty.

I carry 1 of these its a fence wire strainer, with hooks really handy, I think if you ever had 4 tonne on the end of it youd need a 2 metre bar to move that handle. But they are great for adding tension like when your trying to do something dodgy with your high lift

Here's what i would:

A) Don't get stuck... as Shep said "if it looks a bit dodgy then find another way"

B)Use my Tigerz11 9000LB winch  it has saved me a few time's and requires very little effort to get you out of the shit :D

I purchased a WARN m8000 from the states landed or $700. I also purchased a plasma rope, got a rebate on the wire rope and saved cost on weight, so it was a win win.

Combined with an AGM battery, I can hall my Jim up a tree!!

My High Lift has also been very useful. Just have to be careful using it. Can make the rig unstable if used incorrectly.

As with any winch system, if there is no tree, stump, half buried coily owner within kooey, a winch won't help, unles you can bury something substantial enough, such as a wheel in the sand or some stakes in the ground.

Have you considered recovery tracks. Might be worth looking at.

I have used a hand winch just like that. Its a pain in the ARSE!
