About to do a rebuild on my g13bb, I got a kit from america with bearings, rings, gaskets etc but forgot the pistons lol. Just wondering what is a good brand piston and where can I get them from and for how much? Also would like to look into rod prices as well.

Any good auto parts shop should be able to supply a set of oversize pistons from ACL.
Why do you want new rods?

Good brand of pistons? Wiseco
There is so much to know about materials and shapes of the pistons before you decide. Also you need to figure out if you are going to go and overbore, since you are already doing the rebuild. If you won't go over than stick with OEM quality pistons, that are the same size, which would set you back about $80/each. There is a company in Sydney at Wetherill Park who trades via EBAY. They are well priced.
Just a query & a statement. I wanted to do a performance rebuild on my engine (a G16B) and realised that even a basic build would be quite expensive. So I opted for an engine conversion, with a bigger faster, newer engine. You will be surprised of how little you would save by rebuilding your own engine.

True? I haven't priced it up yet but when I was quoted something like $1700 for a COMPLETE rebuild (thats new waterpump as well e.t.c) surely just doing a hone and new pistons+rings+bearings should be way cheaper?

this is what i have worked out money wise so far for g16b rebuild.Bore and Hone - $138
Cut Seats - $173
Reface Valves- $127
Would be cheaper to do a full Recondition on the Cylinder Head- $313
I have added a detailed description of the reconditon procedure so you know what is involved.
RECONDITION HEAD PROCEDURE
Dismantle head, clean and inspect all parts for wear and/or damage. Check head for hardness and straightness. Inspect all valves and guides for wear and/or damage. Check all springs for correct seat pressure. Hot tank head and components, Bead Blast Head, Face all valves and cut all valve seats. Surface head face, assemble head, vacuum test all valves and wrap.rebuild kit around $400 inc.water/oil pump delivered.put together myself around $900..not too bad i thought considering it will be like new,

Just did a rebuild on a g16a
I did every thing asides the re bore and recon head.
Only thing I didnt replace was, Conrods and water pump
Cost = $1000-$1200

did you get the crank reground with new big end and main bearings ?
did you rebuild the oil pump ?

No didn't get crank reground, I think I should of
Replace big nd main bearings
Doesn't have oil pump I don't think
Has oil pickup though.

i gave it to the shop to be cleaned and put a seal in it
i asumed they cleaned it

So even doing the lot yourself it still comes out to a $1000?
That's bloody crazy.
I was just going to go with new pistons + rings + bearings (and a bore if it needed it)
The head was apparently rebuilt a month or two before I got it.

all my parts came close to the $500 mark
i asume what you want will be around $300 to $400
estimate
pistons - 140
rings -60 to 90
bearing under 100 each for mains and big
just a hone so u get ur cross hatching back, if your bores are oval shape or warn you will have to get a rebore and oversize pistons
edit: i would find all my receipts but who knows were they are
i should find them

WOW that is cheap as chips. I was quoted for a g16b rebuild.
$900 Bore to 1.7L and Hone, inspect bearing replace if required. Supply new standard pistons. You need them since you are boring 0.40 of inch
Full recon of the head, port, Cut Seats, 3 angle valve job 1mm over std. $900
That was me taking off head and block and delivering it to the machinist. Cams would have been untouched, Crank not knife edged. Think there we discussed decking and machining for a better compression.
Hot tank head and components, Bead Blast Head, was included in pricing.
I was going to re-assemble in and put in car. I freaked out. We did not even start talking forged pistons.
My engined is okay as it is, but I was after more power/torque, but the gain/dollar was little, hence the reason I am pricing engine conversions at mates rates.

I got mine bored out to 40 thou
You probs get no were near 1.7l
60 thou is the most u can go I think before u get weak bores
I also got head and block shaved
All ready been shaved before I got it shaved more( lots of compression)
If I can remember it roughly cost me around the $400 mark to get head fully recon(every thing replace)
plus sand blasted
bore out to 40 thou
Shaved
And some seals fitted(oil pump, crank and cam)
$550 for parts
Vrs gasket kit
New exhaust and intake valves
40 thou piston and rings to match
Standard main nd big bearings
Timing belt
There's more bits but can't think of the top of my head

you are right. It wasn't 1.7 but it was closer to 1.7 than to 1.6
I also think that the original pistons I wanted was what would have piven me the extra CC's. Not sure about the technicalities but it had something to do with the piston dish, or maybe that was to do with compression.
Realistically it isn't very economical to rebuild if you aren't doing most of the work your self. Sometimes wish i was machinist.

I have a jimny with a g13bb and whanting to put new set of rings in it the piston are good no ridge on bore the ring groove on piston is 1.35 top ring 1.20 2nd 2.50 oil ring I got a set of rings but thay are 1.20/1.20/2.50 is it normle for top ring to be loose
