it wasnt thousands of dollars to engineer it, it was more like $1500 - and the engineer picked up things that we could improve on to make things stonger or more reliable. It also meant doing the lane change test which proved to him (and me) that it handled well. In my opinion it was money well spent to ensure a top quality job.
just because most police turn a blind eye to it doesnt mean its not unroadworthy in the eyes of the law, and doesnt mean one day something happens and you're in big trouble.
i was also making a point on worst case scenario of flaunting those laws, not saying anyone that does so is going to jail for doing it. again, an immature attitude to the detriment of others.
Monkey - a 2" body lift is legal so long as you dont increase the tyre size or raise the suspension =)
Yes, I will hold on to everything you say. You seem to know everything about the 4wd community, I'm sure I set a bad example for everyone. Has anyone ever told you that you are a dickhead? I'm pretty sure I speak for alot of people when I say, you are a dickhead

I think Aliens point is that 99% of the time you will get by fine, just bare in mind that there is that 1% that could screw you over and potentially cost you more then you can afford to lose.

Also if you don't tell your insurer about every mod they could refuse a claim...engineered or not.
Don't think that by just telling them and they say ok that you are covered either...if it's illegal you are at risk of not being covered.

I'd be worried about your insurer saying no to settling a claim when you hit a $100,000 BMW.
Not usually an issue, but something to always keep in mind. Bucketload wrote: Yep, I've read the same docs as alien. It comes down to the roof height -tyres, suspension, body lift etc not exceeding 50mm from standard (could try putting the soft top down). The same documents also covers seats, steering wheels, tyre width, roll bars, bonnet scoops etc. I guess the question is whether you will get a sticker or whether you are are insured/liable if you ever get into the shit....
Finally some common sense prevails. Thanks guys.

chris out of everyone on here you're the one making ridiculous claims and misleading people to think its fine to have an unroadworthy car. claims that put lives and livelihoods at risk in the long run, let alone the immature insults.
sure, im talking about the freak chance something goes wrong, but why wouldnt you cover for that if you had the opportunity?

Geez! Talk about getting heated!
Engineering and mod plates - critical on a daily driven car IMO. My Zook is reasonably modified but hardly gets driven ... it goes offroad, takes me hunting and heads off on camping trips ... nothing more. So while I know I'm taking a pretty sizeable risk by not having it engineered, I can live with it as I only use it in off-peak, quiet conditions and can bump my driving awareness up to suit.
No way I'd be doing that if I drove it daily though. Peak traffic, mind wandering due to work stress, the daily grind, half asleep in the morning ... all of those distracting influences make it just too easy to play bumpems with someone. And if the person I played bumpems with was driving a Boxter (like I sat behind on the way to work this morning), and I ran up their tail, the insurer would have a very good argument to deny indemnity based on the reduced braking capacity of my vehicle. I'd probably struggle to pay for a Boxter exhaust tip, let alone a new rear end.
So Aron's advice re legalities and insurance is actually pretty much on the money. You don't have to heed it - but be aware that you are taking that risk each time you drive, and don't lump crap on those ensure they are covered for that risk...

Before I took suziblu off the road, she had a total lift of 7", no engineers report, I live in a very small town an she only sees the blacktop as a means of getting out to play.
I have had copers look at her, and no dramas, even told that its not us "sensible" people they are out to get, rather, the hoons. Was not long after I was told that, that I took her off the road, she was over the top.
My next lass is to be similar, but fully engineered, just because the cops turn a blind eye, and very good on them, to us "sensible" people, does not make it legal.
IF your mods make for a better offroader, well done, but, this does not mean that it makes for a better, or even the same quality ride on the blacktop.
How would you feel, if, one day you have a prang, and there is an inquiry, your mods are unengineered, and found to be the reason people died, an you end up paying for this for the rest of your life.
We have all done naughty things, christ I live naughty, but, if you are going to be on the road, an engineer will help you out, he really is your friend.

maybe we should start a poll, "Is Alien a dickhead for trying to get someone to do the right thing"
