Hi guys,

Was just wondering if anyone as imported any of the uhf's from lowrange. Looking at this one in particular http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.ph ... radio.html . Will this uhf even work in Australia or do they run a different frequency? Had abit of a search on here and could find anything.

If these won't work does anyone know anywhere in brisbane selling good cheap radio's.

Thanks in advance Sando

Found on http://www.aurfscan.com.au:

Quote:
The US FRS UHF system has 7 frequencies in the 462MHz band and 7 frequencies in the 467MHz band.

The 462MHz frequencies are shared with the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), the 467MHz frequencies are FRS only.

FRS is unlicensed low power (0.5w) and simplex only, whilst GMRS is licensed, allows a higher power (5W and up to 50W in some cases), and allows repeaters with an input frequency exactly 5MHz above receive.

Whilst this sounds fantastic and they are as cheap as anything to buy over the internet, if you check out the frequencies assigned to these services you will find them smack in the middle of the Commercial Band in Aus, and because they make use of CTCSS to provide heaps of 'channels', you may be clobbering legit commercial users and not even know it (where legit means they have paid a lot of money to ACMA to use that frequency).

Beware of anybody offering cheap UHF handhelds from the States as they are most likely either FRS or GMRS.

40 Channel UHF sets are most likely to be Aus/NZ UHF CB's, 22 channel sets are most likely FRS/GMRS.

I think that's a no.

Steve.

looking at some uhf on gumtree...plenty of dreamers there!
Almost as expensive as a brand newy, only 40 channels, and covered in dust...
sheesh.

Must be one born every minute.

There are heaps of good, cheap UHF's on ebay, for between $100 & $200, for new and 2nd hand, right up to $400+... if you just want a basic UHF rig with antenna, you can get them for under $250... :D

Only Australia dumped 27mhz in favour of UHF, dont know why, 27mhz is still used the world over... and if you are in the middle of nowhere broken down, a UHF is next to useless... SSB 27mhz can be a life saver for those who cannot afford the higher powered professional HF... i am still a fan of 27mhz, and would have it with me if i was going anywhere remote... :D

27Mhz is still widely available as Marine radios from Uniden and GME, which would seem to offer advantages in waterproofing in 4wd applications, but the main reason 27Mhz fell out of favour is the need for some technical knowledge in setting up the antenna with ground planes and SWR meters.

UHF is much more user friendly, being virtually Plug and Play in comparison.

The 27MHz marine channels are not the same as the 27MHz CB channels... So unless the person you wish to call also has a 27MHz Marine radio then it aint gonna work...

Older CB radios from the 70's and 80's used crystal chips for each channel frequency. If you wanted to change different freqs, you just bought different chips.

Modern CBs from GME are electronically set for frequencies, so the one radio can be programmed for Marine or Citizen Band freqs.

If you buy the right radio, yes, you can have both, but not all radio's have this functionality...
