Hey guys,

Did a big search on weird, odd, bad terrible sounds coming from my drive train, and all the results came back weren't quiet like mine is.

No Noise in first when driving, tiny little bit in second, sounds faint, get into third, no noise until I accelerate, then it sounds like howling coming from underneath me, in fourth it's really terrible, gets louder and more high pitched. Soon as I back off the noise stops completely. Only comes on again when I touch the accelerator pedal. Is this an input shaft bearing in the gearbox that needs to be replaced? Any other ideas before I go nuts?

I'd be looking at transfer first, look for oil leak's & level.
If you oil's white & over full it's likely to be full of water.

But!!!!! Look at all of your oil's......

I'd say transfer case. Normally hardfacing weras away and the box is a throw away. Nomater how many new bearings noise all the time.

Or get a new set of crawler gears

same thing here.. I have a new rear diff going in next week. I'll let yous know if it sorts it out

News unis and all. Second hand tranny. Will check oil sunday to see if theres oil in it, if not Maybe input shaft bearing?

I will also look for water in it sunday. But it really sounds like it's coming from the gearbox, not tranny. I have breathers in both above the engine so I don't know how?

Swb?? rear diff's are just behind you to, does the noise increase in pitch with speed????

Mine does and it has sort of a grinding/meshing sound at slower speeds. I have hung my head out the back while driving and it definitely sounded like it was coming from the diff.

It increases with revs... soon as you back off the accelarator even slightly the noise stops. IF the clutch is in when your rolling there is no noise at all. Doesn't do it in first, very very very faint and only higher in the rev range in second, soon as you put it in third and touch the accelarator it makes like a shimmering grinding noise that sounds similar to a super charger whine but just increases as you put it through the revs.

That is correct. It's not the speed it's the particular gear and the rev's that it is doing that determines the pitch and level of the sound. And only when there is accelaration applied, All be it just feathering the pedal will bring the sound on.

hmm righto I'm going to test this on my way to work tonight. I do know that 80 sounds the same in 4th and 5th on mine but I'll have a go at 3rd and 5th and see.

How loud is your rosco? People can hear the sound while im driving at 80km/h towards them, they look back when im about 40 metres behind them. So im assuming it is really audible. It's really really loud in the car also.

abclarke replaced his rear diff and it was sorted so thats what I'm having done on thursday

Just replaced all my diffs mate, definatley not coming from the diff or it would be a constant sound and would be speed based.

hmm ya I think mine is speed based but I guess well find later in the week if it doesn't work might move on to the transfer bearings

Nope. Had a geared one, but blew it to peices. Just a stock box pulled out of a wreck.

From your description if I've read it right (i.e. changes with speed but not engine revs) It has to be something between the output of the gearbox and the wheels.

Have you revved it with the transfer case in neutral? That could tell you more in that only the input and counter shaft would be spinning in the transfer.

Also, if you haven't already, test it like Rossco did by doing the same speed in each gear and see if the noise changes.

i had tha same prob with mine when i put my 6.5.1 and new bearings in all good . so i would say its tha gears are worn or tha bearing

Yeah tried it... It's not speed based... it's rev based x gear. You've read it wrong Teracis. It's either tranny or G/box I hopes :\. Anyone else had same probs?

Cool so if the noise changes for different gears at the same speed then you're right it has to be gearbox related.

Could it be the thrust bearing for the clutch that everyone seems to talk about?
I wasn't present when my clutch was swapped over in my engine swap (had to go to the shop) so I have NFI where the bearing is.

I'm probably wrong though, because iirc the thrust bearing is a noise that changes depending on whether the clutch is in or out.

Drove my vit on the highway yesterday and holy shit.....my radio isnt loud enough to cover my noise.

It's on in 3rd and 5th. Noise goes away on declaration. However, when slowing Down for lights in 3rd (foot off pedals) the noise will be faint but come on and off.

Mines not a whine just a really loud grinding noise.

Any ideas?
