Christover1 started a thread a while ago which touched on what I have been looking at for a while now here.

Rather than hihjack his thread, I thought I should ask on a new one.


Anyone run 33's with the 4 speed auto and Vit transfercase? (Standard R&P - 5.12)

I suspect the on road performance might make it just too hard to live with but am after some real world experiences.

My father went from 205s to 235s, and says he can definitely feel the power loss, no real biggy, but its there, and he is using more fuel.

235s are about 29", if you then go to 33" tyres, the upgrade is a further 13.8%, your road speed would be too low in the rev band, and would lose speed/fuel economy/power.

Yes.... I think I know what the answer is going to be.

I find my 31"s are bearable but not brilliant.

From 31s to 33s you will drop 6.4% of your revs, so, at 3400 around 220 revs.

Hang on, being an auto, the diffs would not be 5.12s unless you or someone prior put them there, I "think" autos are 4.6-1, if im right, you can change ring and pinion, and do the 33s.

Around 11% lower final drive with 5.12s over 4,6s

5.12 for sure (although the front is missing 1 tooth! )

I'd like to do some gear calc's but am finding it hard to get the ratios of the auto box. I think 3rd gear is 1:1, does that sound right?

Sounds right, but its irrelevant really. You say you find the current setup with 31's just bearable. Then 33's will be shit.

Also keep in mind that because your gearing would be Soooooo far out on 33's, the engine and auto will be struggling ALL the time.

when you start getting up to 33's its not so much the gearing gets you its the weight of the things

At the moment on 31's
I find 1st too low, when 2nd is too high.
I'm going to put a set on as a test, and
try it in the real world.
It may just work out that 1st would be about right,
and stay in it,
rather than it hunting up and down.

Weight is an issue, for my poor old bones.
And would also add to cars woes.

Mostly I have learnt all the calculating of what ifs,
is no where near as good as try it and see.

I am still undecided at moment,
but it would be skinnyish 33 x 10's I would go for.

I'll wait for t-case gears first, as off road sucks already":)

my mates sierra has vit motor auto and tc and 529 diffs and he reconds that it went better on the high way iwth 36 then with his 33
undertaker or sierra case is the only fix

some one give me some 33's and i'll tell you i find the 31's pretty good around town, able to sit on 110 no problems

yeah vit 1.6 4 speed auto 4.2 vit tc and 5.29 pardo centers
it sat nice in 3rd on the free way with 36
forth doesnt get used much
hes looking into a under taker now

This is exactly what I was after, I just haven't found anyone that has tried it yet.

I'd be looking at the BFG 33 x 10.5 as well.


I think in the end I will be looking at a Kicker3, Undertaker or similar setup as the answer but was hoping I may be able to get away with just running the tyres.

I'd agree - a 4speed vit gets pretty doughy on the highway with 31's. With 33's you'll pretty much only get into OD maybe on the flat, and you'll fall into the gap between OD locked converter and OD unlocked converter when you do.

ANY sort of acceleration or grade will have you straight into 3rd.

On road gearing big tyres is the Vitara's nemesis.
