All the recognized brands are around the $1k mark. I settled with the Lincoln 180 for $1000 with wire, gauges/ regulator, it has the best wire feed assembly. The old Lincoln 170 which it replaces still goes but the newer model is heaps better. Inverter models are good to use but if the inverter card dies expect the card to be $600+. WIA and Lincoln are the only ones I saw that weren't inverter.

Looking at a new welder. Been using a gasless mig but some 'Little darling' decided they needed it (and a heap of tools as well) more than me.

So I do lots of light gauge (Body work) and some heavier (upto about 3mm) and wondering what would be best ...Tig or gas Mig. Im not a welders butthole but can lay a half decent bead. Was pretty good with an oxy back in my day too.

Suggestions?

If you can oxy weld well, then tig is an option for you.
However 99% of home "welders" can't TIG for shit.

Gas mig is quick, painless and relatively idiot proof if you've got a general understanding of method.

Lash out on a good one. Lincoln, Miller, Migomag. Buy once and own it for life.

Gas mig is easier and more efficient. TIG is IMO an artform that needs a skillful touch(no offense) Bang for buck go a MIG.....even stekky can use a MIG

i recently bought a stick/tig welder, and i love it. was cheap enough and works great.

its a uni-mig ARC140 inverter welder.

with the tig attachments and gas, its great. welds the body panels great and can handle up to a 3.2 mm stick. so can handle larger stuff..

i love it..
but tig is hard!!

I use tig for frame repairs, stainless and small work. Mig for everything else.

i brought one of these a while ago for home and its great i have gas mig welded 5mm thick rhs and tig welded my mates tank about .9 mild and have even used the gasless mig on 3mm gal rhs for a cheap welder i cant fault it yet.
p.s. can also buy a mini spool gun to mig weld up to 5mm ally (ill get one of these next month)

Just bought a inverter MIG/TIG/Stick Weldmaster 180 this aro. Talked the guy down a bit too ended up costing just over a $1000 bucks.

Just need to wire in a 15A outlet and is all systems go again tomorrow.

It only took 2 years to completly destroy the little sip 100 gassless, then again I never knew what I was getting myself into with this Zuke stuff.

I'll report back on how it goes, then again maybe not as I won't be allowed near it if LTM21 gets his way.

I just need something to do very basic welding.
EG tacking, etc and then when I need the real stuff done I have a mate who can weld properly with the mig or he brings his portable TIG and works the artwork!
But id like to get better at welding as I think its a handy skill to have even at a moderate level.

We've got those at school. About as good as a welder gets really. I'm saving for one now.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Been on you tube and watched some vids and I think I will get a mig / tig combo. Watched some tig vids and it got me all excited as I loved oxy welding and tig looks like a lot fun (Once mastered)

Now just wait for the insurance money then Im off for some retail therapy. Mmmmmmm tools !!!

I have one that I boughta while back its a tig, plasma cutter and stick.
I only use the plasma cutter as I've really never found a tig better than my MIG unless its ally and same reason for the stick

why dont you wait till you got $500-$600 then you can get an inverter mig the renegade are pretty good bang for your buck. we have a 160 at work and everyone who uses it is surprised with how good it is it'll weld 10mm plate to 4mm no worries.
