My quick question. Can connecting the wires back to front on the exciter of an altenator cause it to charge the battery at 17.4 volts???
Cheers

Have you got a multimeter?
Fire the thing up with the meter hooked to it and check?

internally in the alternator? or by back to front you mean swapping the sense wire and the indicator light into the back of the alternator?

It can cause damage to the regulator..
Sounds like that may have happened.

ok so i managed to get on the computer lastnight and have a good read over the tech advice on installing one of these alt's. I do have the sense wire and batt light wire the correct way around now the problem im faced with.
For some reason at idle i have almost no voltage coming from the alt it sits around 12.4 volts.
The second you give it a little throttle the charge jumps up to 18+ volts.
Ive tried it whilst under load (spotties and hibeams) on and it makes neglidgable difference i assume this could mean the regulator is fried??? Any help or confirmation would be appreciated

i had a similar problem but only went to 14.9 volts, all i did was hook sense wire directly to the battery i think. Wont go about 14.2 now
