Hi guys,

1990 G16B 16 Valve 5 Speed Manual.

I went away last weekend up the hume to Sydney, just a road trip, no bush unfortunatly. I had 4 people in the car and 4 peoples luggage, not a bad effort getting it all in, haha.

But anyway, I noticed that with all that exra weight in the car it just sucked. It lacked so much torque up hills, that I was having to go back to 4th to maintain 100km/h, on some of the steeper hills it struggled to maintain even 90km/h.

So I was thinking what happens when I have a fridge, draws, rear bar, front bar, rock sliders, big tyres, dual batteries, and all the camping gear I need for a few weeks in the car.

So what are the best value for money options for torque?

My most favourbale option is the Hawk Torquer Cam, its only $350ish, and it bolts straight in. But how much more punch would it really give? Does anyone have any experience with them?

How do exhausts with extractors go?

I heard there is a chip that you can put on them. Anyone know anything about this?

Cheers

Matty

Your best bet would be all of them. Cam, exhaust with extractors, and some way to tune the motor for the mods. There is no Eprom/chip available for the G16B. You would need a fuel/timing piggyback ecu at the very least.

Might also pay to look into some heavier valve springs and get a little porting done to the head when the cam goes in.

These mods may nett a 20-25% gain if done correctly. Which is pretty good really, but you wouldn't get much change from $3-4K.

Hahahaha

Yeah maybe an engine swap would be better, but it'd have to be down the track. Id prefer other goodies, has anyone done the 2.5L V6 conversion into a vit?

I just realized my vit is a 1990 model so does that mean the diff gears are less than 5.12? Only the later ones came with 5.12 diff gears yeah?

i've got extractors and 2" straight through on my 1.6 EFI and it flies... but if i could fit 4 people in it, sure it'd be a slug... price you pay.

The 2.0l V6 would be my choice... For roughly about the same money as you are paying for all the rest of the goodies... $4000ish at a guess. Less if you are confident enough to do it yourself.

x 10 on the Extractors... they give it a bit more... but like they said its a 1600... she was never built for 100's of kilowatts and 1000's of newtonmeters of torque :)

G'day all,

It's just annoying not being able to drive around with all this weight on board without dropping back to less than highway speed on hills.

My car needs to keep up with crusiers, patrols, and rangers before I get to the bush, and it's just not up to it with this tiny little motor.

I used to run a 180SX with a CA18DET in it which is a 1.8L turbo, and that thing would break traction from 4th to 5th in the dry. I just don't get how dropping 0.2 of a litre makes so much difference. Even if the 1.6 was turbo charged I just don't see it making anywhere near that power.

I'm by no means saying I want my Vit to break traction between gears, but the torque my old car had would be so nice.

I'm going to make a few phone calls tomorrow and see how much a few differnent conversions will cost.

I'll look at the the zook range of V6's and maybe a few other motors, like an SR20 or CA18 and see what a few mechanics can come up with.

Thanks guys

sorry but you're just going to have deal with it, unless you're prepared to spend the $$$$'s required to either build a motor, boost it or an engine change. rather than having a 1/2 baked engine conversion, i'd be looking at either an SV620 2.0 V6 Vitara LWB or a SQ625 Grand Vitara even then they're no sports car.

I totally know where your comming from, I had a turbo car too then It felt like any other car I had seemed dangerously slow, but it's just a matter of adjusting to it. Like atari said, just deal with it and ask yourself this, will your 180 be able to go where your vit go's?

But I can hook you up with a complete turbo setup to suit the g16b If you like ;)

Why do people think they can make a lil zook perform like a formula 1 car.

Its got me fukd, its a zook, a little donk for fuk sake.

If you can get it to go like stink, it will kill you, it was never meant to perform on the blacktop.

Be happy with the fact that at the lights these clowns can zoom off, sweet, let them come out n try to keep up where a zook shines.

If you want a race car, get one, simple.

Only for them to stop at the next set of lights which turn green as you approach them and whaddya know turns out your in front of them now :D

Drive smart, not fast ;)

But I can relate to what he's getting at, It is a little frustrating getting up long hills with a fully loaded zook, but I have lernt to have fun with it and shout encouraging words. And just remind yourself, It's just a 1.6L N/A.

I don't think I would be far off... IF done properly and not some half baked job.

Cam
Rockers
Valve Springs
Extractors
Exhaust
Piggyback ECU
Labour to fit all of the above
Labour/Dyno time to tune the piggyback ECU
Porting if you want to make the most of the above
Plus all relevant gaskets etc

Much less than that and You really aren't going to see the largish gains that Matty is looking for.

You can then do things like a stepped valve face, new matching valve seats etc but it's getting a bit ridiculous on a old small engine.

Also if you look a bit up in the posts:

Note the word "correctly"...

You COULD do it cheaper but for less gains and still a lot of effort. Really not worth it considering it won't come near the output he is after.

Don't want a race car bud, just one that will keep up with an average 4WD.

I can't believe that there aren't more performance mods that net better gains than what the current ones do.

I'll get some prices on different conversions and report back soon.

Thanks for all the replies.

Hi guys,

Spoke to a mechanic today that is very familiar with vits and the like about different engine conversions.

He told me a drive in, drive out price to fit a h25 series motor would cost $6k if everything went right. He said if I wanted the engine and gearbox rebuilt and other little things went wrong it could easily blow out to $10k.

So I'm probably not going to go for anymore power any time soon.

Job sounded pretty big when he spoke to me about it, so the price sounds fair.

He said he wouldn't touch a ca18det or sr20det conversion.

I'm thinking I might just buy a cheap old run around and leave this in my backyard for weekend fun, that way I van run whatever size tyres abd what ever mods I want for much less cost and hassle.

Cheers
