test light will tell you enough, you want the light to light up heaps on the positive terminal and flash when connected probe to positive, clip to negative
easy thing to do first is pull a lead and check for spark
I am guessing a module or coil breaking down from heat, once it cools down some off it goes again

Okay. Just got home and had a look.
It lights up real bright as you said. and clip on neg and probe on positive it sort of flickers in relation to revs its noticeable if you look at it hard enough but i wouldnt say its switching on off on off.

keep a testlight in the car, next time it die's check coil positive if it's good clip the clamp on the test light to coil negative and the probe end to battery positve, wind it over as if you are trying to start it, if the test light flickers really fast get a new coil, if not get a new ignition module.

its inside the dizzy, converts the magnetic pulse from the reluctor in the dissy to a switched signal to trigger the coil

Ended being a clip connector thing was had it and sometimes didnt give a connection.
When it died i traced it back to there. limped home and hard wired it and the rest of the wiring near by so everything was fresh and strong. gave everything a wd-40 clean and rub with emery cloth. Good as new!
Thanks for the help guys.

Run the thing at night and have a look under the bonnet in the dark and check for sparks around the dizzy and coil. I've checked all the connections they're all good. So check for sparks coming from the insulation? I did get an awesome shock the other week..

Haha yeah. This one tricked me! Taking the test light with me so i had it while it was dead helped. Rather than having it at home.. running fine.
