Ive just got my rear tail shaft balanced and new uni joints fitted both ends, got it back home , and noticed that both ends are out of phase 90 degrees difference than original..hence no dot realignment..I fitted it took it for a run and no vibration or unis slapping around like before,it drives well..I rang them to ask why the unis are out of phase there response was to disregard the dots as it was balanced the the way it is . Seems a bit odd to me..what do you think ..it does drive good now though. Does it really matter?

Nissan actually run the front shaft on the GU Patrol out of time from factory.

I'm a bit of a stickler for getting the yolks lined up right, just so the uni aren't fighting each other when running big angles.

My shafts are cactus at the slip yokes, front one has about 10mm movement up and down if you push on the middle of the shaft!

Can't be good for it but unless I pay the $90 each they want up the road, I have to wait for Jas to get some back in stock! (Or someone to wreck a WT with good shafts)

I'd be taking it back & asking politely to balance it with the dot's lined up.

Cause if you remover the shaft & it slips out you have to get it re-balanced again... :crazy:

thats not really a problem with realignment if they separate , they etched in 2 arrows on both shafts and painted them white..I will drive it for awhile then see..

Not really, rover also done this from factory. When a u-joint works, the output speed becomes the same as the input speed but it is not a smooth power transfer. The nature of the beast will cause it to accelerate twice and de accelerate twice (torsional vibration) through a rotation and thus average out to the input speed. This torsional vibration gets worse with increase u-joint angle.

I think what happens when you put the yokes out of phase you end up with one acceleration and one deceleration term at higher u-joint angles thus producing less torsional vibration or something like that.

End line: There is a perfectly logical reason for balancing it like this :D
