Hey all... my diffs doing a nice thud when i let the clutch out, its definitely gotten worse over the last few weeks and happens in any gear if i let the clutch out medium/fast.

Grabbing the rear tailshaft theres a ton of play in the pinion, and jacking the rear in the air i can move the wheels slightly left/right and up/down, only very slightly, but when i do it clearly moves the axle (can hear it).

Rear diff hasnt been touched for 4 years since it had an airlocker installed, unis are new and no play.

Anyone got a diagnosis for me before i take it in on monday to get a proper opinion? (ie: strip it down).

any bearing that moves in the rear is rooted

bearings be fooked, take it to a diff specialist and get the to check it compleatley.

hope so - i'd rather it be a bearing than anything with teeth... im afraid its a worn crownwheel...

Follow up question - if i baby it (gentle on the clutch) is it going to survive doing 100km/hr for 45 mins, then about 3-5 hrs of low range crawling, then another 45mins of 100km/hr? before i take it in on monday? =)

i plan to =) its been doing the clunk for ages now so i can't see it failing catastrophically on me (famous last words?)

if its from the gears - might break em on your trip

if its from bearings - probably be ok

If the bearing is rooted, then the pre-load on the bearing will effect the backlash between the crownwheel and pinion. I wouldn't drive it Arron, you're going to fruck it good and fast.

if a diff bearing collapses it will more likely then not take out the crown wheel and pinion as well.

You could chip teeth off the crownwheel, the pinon and crownwheel are going to mesh wrong. I wouldn't risk screwing my airlocker for a few days driving.

Mine does this wear would I get new bearings. Im about to fit spartan locker so might as well do bearings. Anyone got a write up on changinv bearings?

if you need to ask then I don't think you should be attempting a spartan. Haha, you are gunna need a puller to get the carrier bearings off.

My rear diff did the same as you explained
I drove over 6 months like it was, but was no heavy 4wding neither did I have big tyres like yours

Bout 3 weeks ago it started becoming noticable. No one in coffs wants to do my locker as they keep tellin me there dodgy. So no choice but to have a crack.

Im no mechanic but the old man is pretty good at it and a mates a mechanic sure
We can figure it out.

just baby it, check the oil for a start,
if its a bearing it could collapse which means removing the rear shaft and driving it 4wd worst comes to worst u breack a tooth other wise its just needs some tlc t

This is the worst advice someone can give. The diff will be spinning regardless of there being a tailshaft or not. Please refrain from talking shit. Arron, just get it fixed mate, you will end up blowing your diff. You don't want to blow your diff on the road and having your rear lock up on the road. Its not cheap getting another center, pinon, crownwheel. You also run risk of fucking the housing too... Just expressing my opinion

for a bloke who is supposed to works in a 4x4 workshop/store you know sweet fuck all about cars.

dont listen to noob boy, the inside end of the axle is supported by your diff bearings. so if you blow the diff the axle isnt going to turn real well is it.

dont baby it because they always break at the best times just fixit while its still relitively cheap

Mines been clunking and whining for 50000km, bearings can handle a fair amount of abuse

My front is the same as yours alien. I'm swapping a new one in today!
But i'm lucky its in the front..

ok so i drove on the weekend and went 4wding for this photoshoot i had planned, just took it easy and babied the diff (rode the clutch a little more). Went fine all day, very proud of my sierra given what i've just found out!

diff was stripped today and so far my damage list is:
- 1 rear wheel bearing (replacing both obviously)
- both rear axles (short side is twisted and fractured, long side is fractured)
- diff bearings are a combination of buggered and on their way
- replaced rear shoes while its all out

will update if anything else is discovered by the diff specialist =)

suzistore do my diffs, much cheaper and better than other diff shops in perth, at least u know an apprentice isn peicing it together too

haha nar mines being done by a pro, and he knows airlockers very well... he is also cost effective.

Sean (suzistore) is on holidays for a week so suzistore wasnt an option.
