I had the same wobble and was quoted a ton of money to replace everything. I did the mechanic tests myself and was not convinced that any of the recommended repairs was "IT"
I finally accidentally found the problem, a $1 cap screw (bolt)
It supports the lateral bar. When I tried to shake the lateral bar, it was tight and there was no play. However, when I tried to move it laterally with a pinch bar, it MOVED.
Now when you realize what the bar does, you understand that THIS is the most important piece to prevent wobble. It prevents the axle from moving right or left, in relation to the car frame.
If the axle moves right, even a small amount, the steering linkage will make the wheels turn left. This will make the axle move left, causing the wheels to turn right.
I would suggest checking here before spending money on other parts that don't seem to be worn all that much.

I just obtained the wobble o' death.
as some of you may know i did a 75mm procomp lift last weekend. got it aligned yesterday, this morning on the way to work i had the VIOLENT death wobbles where i had to actually stop it was that bad. the gear stick was thrashing about and the whole car was mental. i pooed somewhat.
i have since yet been unable to re-produce that situation, i think the conditions must have been "just right" for it to occur.
now i find it hard to believe doing the alignment would make this occur as the dude rekons it was hardly out at all. check the pic for my results printout.
After speaking with the previous owner, he has said he spent a heap of coin doing "the front end" which i found out after a few questions that he got the bearings done and the kingpin bearings, in order to get rid of his wobble. so im reluctant to start mucking around with the bearings if they have just been changed. he did say that it might need the shims.
so my question now is this:
Do i simply add one shim to the top king pin each side as per the suzuki bulletin notice? or do i just do what is nescessary to get the 4kg pull test? Or what should i do from here, im really annoyed atm.
I ordered a set of 4 shims from suzuki for about 10 bucks. Should i bother with the radius arm bush? they go for about 70 bucks a hit.
PS. I had a degree of wobble from the start, this violent action scared the shit out of me though so i dont want it happening again

x2
But any how i think jayj is talking about the panhard rod, check, all the panhard rod mounting brackets, as over the year's they can wear the side of the hole away from side to side movemnt, and become lose causing the diff been able to move side to side so that ='s wobble!
I can get a pic about what i'm talking about if you want.

Wholly crap, it happened Again this morning. I was changing lanes at the time and ended up blocking both lanes while the car jumped all over the place. Once recovered it was okay again. I loosened and re tightened the panhards last night

Well I can't say I have attempted to fix anything yet. What should I attempt first? Its definitely more aggressive than a mild wobble at 70, this is a flat out loss of control. I have a set of kingpin shims on order from Suzuki, and a wheel bearings tool is on the way from ebay. I looked at the tie rod ends in the car park and couldn't wobble it by hand, but there was grease coming from the boots.
When you lift the car do you need to fit a dropped Pitman arm to correct the steering. Geometry?

no! Cus that would mean your drag link and panhard are not parallel to each other and it would cus massive bump steer. (please correct me if im wrong some one).
Oh and my wobble is back, but is no where near as bad as what it was . Scales when did you last have your tyres balanced?

My gut feeling is to put the shims in and then do the bushes if that doesn't work. Do the radius arm bushes have a particular orientation when they are pressed in? My ones didn't have any markings on them to indicate such, unlike other models it seems
One more thing, do I need to re adjust my steering damper now I have lifted it???

Is your steering damper a RTC??? or just a normal damper?

do the wobbles come and go like one days its good then the other its shit?? cause the grease can repack its self in and make it nice and tight again.
just a suggestion. yours could be related to the king pins and such.
hope ya figure it out soon they suck.
so happy ours are gone.

The RTC damper would be a good place to start. Check this out.
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewt ... &p=1089178
In particular this part.
Just stop the vehicle in your driveway, shed or where ever... IN A DEAD STRAIGHT LINE. (IE: have the wheels pointing directly forwards). Then climb underneath and loosen off the 4 Allen bolts that hold the clamps on the spring. The clamps will then be "free" to move either way along the shank of the damper and the spring will force the clamps to their natural position, whichever way it is.
Then you re-tighten the 4 Allen bolts and it should be all good.
Remove it completely and see how it goes then?

I have the wobble
Not as dramatic as some but it shakes. One interesting thing is that is only really does it in the morning? and it is worse after a 4wd on the beach but only for a few days. Mine comes and goes, and changes in severity. I have also ordered shims, but have not really worried about chasing them. I think I have accepted the fact that some jimnys have a steering wobble. Wakes you up on the way to work
