Yeah I know 4WD Action information should be treated carefully

It was Bob Jane t-marts shop at Campbelltown who said no Maxxis LT in that size, as did tyrepower at Minto [Western Sydney]

I can get the D694 in LT in 245/70/16 - that was one of the reasons why I actually start this thread about tyre sizes etc. There's nothing under that size in LT in that range they are Passenger construtsion.

MacBear, with the Maxxis tyre you have - inbetween the outside lugs, does the tread rise up a bit - it looks like it in the printed off photo I've got - just wondering when they they are over half worn how they'll handel offroad if the water/mud can't clean out the sides due to that? I've been to a few different tyre shops now but none have had them in stock so I can't see what I'm on about, but at that price I have concided them too.

Is there a reason you specificaly need the LT carcass? A GV isn't really a heavy vehicle and if you upsize you getting a greater carrying capacity anyway. I know they go on about puncture / impact resistance but again that comes down to the weight of the vehicle and contact pressure.

Jeez... well i have the reciept to say there is a Maxxis LT in that size, and the product number - MAO12257066, and i recently saw them at a 4WD Show in Perth, and they were LT...

Yes it does, it was one of a couple of Maxxis AT's that have a square outside lug, with a little raised bit to help with traction, i have attached a BIG pic of the tyre, you can see the outside lugs clearly, and the little raised bit... in the, nearly 12months i have owned them, they have only worn 2mm in the 12mmm tread depth they came with new, so i would think that even if they went to half worn, they would still be pretty good... i will keep mine another couple of years, and then get some new tyres, as i tend to give mine shite when offroad... hehe...

( CLick on the small pic, to get a BIGGER pic )

BFG A/T's would be my pick of tyre as a tyre that you would use in all conditions and with the proper care they assure me they will give me around the 100k on the 100 series and this has been confirmed with others I have talked to. Also the fact that these are available all over Oz not like some brands out there if you were driving around Oz.

On the mud tyres I would agree with the GY Mtr's Wranglers OLD STYLE yes a bit on the noisey side but in the bush top tyre. In the wet ALL muddies are crap.
At the moment I have the KM2's on the vit as a play tyre and they are OK but not as good as the Wrangler.

TIP:

If you use your muds as a daily drive tyre. You will find that the rubber will wear and chip BUT if every so often you put 40psi in and go for a long drive on the hwy at speed (1 Hr) to get the heat into them you will find they will soften up. I would do this on the way, if I was going for a day out in the bush climbing rocks and hard surfaces. Makes the tyres grip.
If you have problems pushing the lugs in with your finger then try it. In the Vit it was never a problem with the ride but a Sierra it might be rough.

Hi Greg
There will be 2 or 3 of us in G.V with some camping gear on a variety of mixed tracks is the reason, I'm just not sure if passenger construction will handle it - flat tyres etc,

Thanks for the bigger pic' MacBear.
If I could find them in LT [yeah I have to look harder it seems] I'll be happy for the price.
With your size tyres - what would I be looking at - 10mm more lift/under diff?

The 694 LT tyres have 2mm greater tread depth. That would be the only benefit of going with them.

The reason the LT has a higher ply rating is to handle more air pressure (65psi to be exact) so you can increase the load. But if you were to run the LT at 43psi the same as the 694 XL max pressure they have the same carrying capacity. We supply the 694 XL to alot of mine sites including underground sites and have no issues not running the LT.

Your welcome... well there are a LT construction in those tyres, so i dont know why all these other stores are saying NO... i prefer the LT, because they are a stronger build, especially in the sidewall, the sidewalls are stiffer, but at the right pressure, its no problem, just gives me more peace of mind when 4wheelin... i got 12mm more height with the LT225/70/16 tyres.. :D

I'll tell you why they say no, coz if they dont have em in stock they'll try something and flog something else or even more so something they get more money from.

The ammount of times ive rang up or gone into tyre places and asked if they carry a certain brand, even if they say yes they dont usually have them in stock and will have to order in. But most will always say well we can do that size in a"blah blah blah brand" .

Exactly, got it in one... i went to Tyrepower first, they said they had never heard of a Bravo 771, and then tried to flog me some coopers AT's, which thay had in stock...
But when i went to Bob Jane, they had them on their computer, didnt try to flog me something else, and ordered the Maxxis AT's in for me, which arrived overnight ! 8O :D

Well I was happy to settle on Maxxis 771 to save some coin in 225/70/16 in LT as said on their website since Maxxis said no 700's in that size, every tyre shop from Campbelltown to Liverpool gave me the run around & said they don't make that size in LT even when I had the printed page from the Maxxis website & MacBear's product number, when I called Maxxis they said LT in 225/75/16 not in 225/70/16 - so I said why doesn't say that on your website, they said selected markets only - so stuff it - I'll go & but something else now. But since I now want 225/70/16 [as not to put the speedo out too far or have too much or any rubbing] I have to settle on passenger construction tyres - ohh well.

Looks like D694's or Yoko AT-s will arrive soon.

[Sorry for the rant - but it's an update!]

So why dont you wann go for a 225/75/16 Maxxis Mudder LT ? I fitted them to my GV without any dramas. To make some more clearance for snow chains i had to remove the mudflaps. Gearing was out a little but i was already planning to do a ratio swap.

Was more than capable as it was.

The 225/75/16 LT are alot easier to get as they are standard fittment on alot of 4x4 work utes.

Quick question B4T - how much room do snow chains need?

So they fit on the GV with 225/75s - what about the front at full lock....i'd imagine they'd hit the chassis....or do you just make sure you dont go full lock?

The main reason why I don't want MT tyres is because the vehicle gets used everyday & it's still quite a drive to get to play areas, so I only require a AT tyre, plus 225/70/16 won't put the speedo out as much. Cheers.

The Chains will hit the chasis rails at full lock but you can adjust the steering stops to prevent it hitting. (Should do mine i guess) :D

I have at least 25mm of clearance around my tyres now as i did some trimming of the plastic skirts. Rear is the only issue i have as i no longer have the plastic front bumper. I will eventually step up to some 245/75/16 muds and do some more trimming to get them to fit.

I've finally settled on some new tyres, getting Cooper AT3's in 225/70/16 on in a few days.

I used to run Cooper ST's on my 100Series [currently running MTZ's on it] & said I'll never get that brand again - but hey I did :) - the AT3's should be fine for my GV
