What happens if you over tighten the first nut to buggery and then back it off after you realized your mistake and before you drove it?? I'm talking 130ft-lb instead of 130in-lb!! C'mon easy mistake to make when your reading the workshop manual in the dark

Just pull the brake hub bit off that the bearings sit in, pull them out or move em round in the hub then reset to FSM standards.

Well if he is worried that he has over tightened the bearings to 'buggery'.

If he undid the the two 50mm nuts. and slid the hub off the bearings will be free yeah? Then if he reassembled then tightened them as per FSM he should be worry free.

Probably a little too padantic but that's something i'd probably do to ease my mind.

Ok so here is a run down of what happened...

Left newy on Wednesday night driving 2 cars coz I couldn't scab a car float and the A Frame thing fell through. Used about 20L/100km to tamworth, stopped there for the night.

Decided that it would probably cost less to hire the car float than it would tonpay for petrol, so scored a float on the cheap through some connections.

Got to Glenn innes and found a heap of oil leaking out the front left hub. Hhhmmm, must be a wheel bearing seal, so rang repco in beaudesert and organized to pick up a wheel bearing kit when we get there..

Get to beaudesert about 7pm and meet up with fatzook, drop off rushos tyres. Next morning pick up some tools and the bearing kit. Head to scenic rim. Set about pulling the front wheel bearing out, hhhmmm seal is fine, no leaking into hub. Must be the axle shaft seal. Ring repco, they don't have one but repco in browns plains does. No probs I'll go pick it up. Get to browns plains right as they're closing up, get my seal.

Continue to pull things apart in the dark, finally pull the axle out, leave it there for the might. Drink beer.

Next morning pull out axle seal, hhhmmm looks fine!! A quick look behind the hub reveals that the hub seal is cactus, it's the only fucking seal I haven't bought. Pull it off, looks to be only stuff at the bottom, flip it 180 degrees so the good bit is at the bottom, at least it won't leak under gravity now.

Put everything back together, overtighten bearing retainer nuts as previously mentioned, pull the hub apart redo the nuts and put everything back together again. Finishing by overtightening one of the bolts on the hub cover and snapping it off!!

Crack the filler bolt on the diff to fill it up and oillcomes pouring out, must have over filled it last time, not enough had leaked out the hub to cause a problem anyway!!

So after all that the problem was the hub seal that would have taken 5 mins to fix and probably could have been done without me even pulling the wheel off!!

Super cheap. about $100

Or a crappier one(like mine) $50 from gasweld.

Yeah I paid about $40 for mine from auto one, dunno what brand it is, but it seems to work ok

Bunnings used to have (and probably still does) 1/2" drive Kinchrome ones for about $80. Not on special.
