Hi guys,

About a month ago my 2001 Suzuki Jimny JLX started revving harder/higher when I was driving over 80kph.

Prier to this I could be driving at 90/95kph at 2,500rpm comfortably, but now at only 80kph its revving at 3,000rpm.

I had it serviced last week for it's 75,000km's service and passed with flying colors, I mentioned to my mechanic about the revving problem/issue and he said he thought it might have been the clutch but it's not the clutch as it's in great working condition.

A mate of mine mentioned that it might be the crank angle sensor playing up/not working correctly, so I also mentioned this to my mechanic and he said that the crank angle sensor is either working or it isn't. Ive also had other mechanics look at it and spoken to them about the problem.

So I'm very frustrated and annoyed that no-one has been able to work the issue out and fix it.

So do any of you guys know what could be causing this issue? And how to fix it?

Cheers

Silly question, but it may help diagnose if its a pre-existing problem you never noticed or a new one.

What size tyres do you have?

and to the other Jimny owners what is the normal revs corresponding with the speeds the op mentioned and please add what size tyres you run?

I stated that the problem stated happening a month ago, so no it's not an pre-existing problem.

The tyres are the stock Bridgestone Dueler H/T D684

Your mechanic is right, your clutch is slipping in top gear, make sure the clutch has free play.

Those revs seem a little low that you said you were doing at 90 to 95kph.. all jimnys I have driven rev at 4000rpm (give or take a few rpm) when doing 100kph. Im amazed it held 95 at that rpm... As they dont really start moving till they get to 3500rpm..

Speedo may have been out???

Unless you have physically changed the gearing then the only other thing it can be is the clutch slipping.

To test it get to 85 and lift your foot of the accelerator and if the revs drop massivly then the clutch is slipping. Check the revs coasting and also when you start to accelerate again.

If you dont have a tacho and are going just on noise check your exhaust for leaks

At idle block the tailpipe with few rags, get someone else to listen all along exhaust system while under back pressure. Thats if u got exhaust leak...

just for a reference point - one of my gearbox seals developed a leak earlier this year which weeped oil onto the clutch making it slip, even though it had plenty of meat on it...

don't 100% dismiss the clutch might be slipping just yet.

easy enough to test too - as above, or just dump the clutch changing between 3rd and 4th gear at decent RPM, you'll certainly feel if its slipping!

Cheers, I did mention to him "could it be that the clutch is dirty", but he was pretty quick to dismiss that suggestion, hence he had just serviced my Jimny.

I'll book it in again with my mechanic this week and I'll drive him around town showing him the issue. Just so frustrating, because if it's not the clutch I feel that its something small just being a pain in the neck, but I'm paranoid that it could lead onto big and worse problems if the issue/problem isn't fixed soon.

It's the clutch. Do as previously suggested.

If it is indeed revving harder this would be the only culprit.

having owned a jimny, I can say its the clutch because the same thing happened with mine... crap got on the plates and it started slipping in high gear.

Take it to a mechanic who will take time to diagnose the issue.

Are you absolutely sure it was doing those revs before?

My current jimny has 215/75/15 tyres and revs at 4000 at 110kmh, so 3000 at 80km sounds normal to me.

My 2006 jimny sat at just below 4000rpm at 110kmh.

could it be that you have only just started noticing it?

Maybe go test drive another jimny at a caryard and check the rev range against yours.

See thats what I thought 2500rpm seems very low for any suzuki at 90-95km/h.

Me thinks the rev counter may have been telling porkies...
Fairly sure you would notice if your speedo was that far out by all the cars whizzing past you.

Also having a dirty clutch is not the same as a slipping clutch in a mechanics mind. It probably didn't even click that you were suggessting the same thing. He probably just went "yeah, no dirt can get to the clutch how could it be dirty???", where as if you said I think it might be slipping he may actually have to look further, if he cares.

Thanks for the suggestion guys.

I'll book it in with the mechanics this week and like I said I'll drive the mechanic around town and explain and point out the problem from my point of view before he or the other mechanics do anything to the Jimny.

As allot of you have said and believe that it is the clutch and only the clutch, I'll ask him to have a good look at the clutch and the gears and take the clutch out and clean it.

Do any of you guys know how much this might cost?

does it stay at the same revs on engine braking? IE get some speed a the top of a hill and get of the throttle, if the clutch slips the revs will drop once you are off the throttle

I think it is stuffed. If you want to sell it you would probably get a couple of grand.

Just took this photo for you, this is a pic of the dash of my 99 manual jimny in 5th gear, doing th 90-95kmh like you said in your first post.

I think it's just that you've just started noticing the revs, i was surprised how high they rev at highway speeds too, but you get used to it.

I hope this saves you some mechanic bills.

My mechanic is pretty sure it's my speedo that's out, so Ive got a GPS to test the speedo this week.
