picked up my g16b seirra (baleno engine) today from the exhaust shop. this was my first drive on the road with the new 1.6. ive only just finished the conversion but i still have a few things left to do like wire up the VSS, tacho signal and check engine light. the engine seemed to be running fine when i started it up and let it idle

i had a few issues on the drive home.
as i would pull up to the traffic lights the engine would stall, unless i kept revving the engine. it was also very hard to start up when it stalled. i could hear small back fires in the exhaust too. i got the car home by adjusting the accelerator cable so it revved a bit higher.

also as i was driving the accelerator feels like there is some delay in it. like i put my foot down when im in gear and for a second there will be nothing, then suddenly it will start to accelerate. when backing off the accelerator it is pretty rough too. it doesn't do this when the car is out of gear or when stationary.

would all this be due to the vss not being connected yet? or would there be other things to look at?

cheers dan

Mine didn't need the VSS to run smoothly. Could there be an induction leak?

Could be the throttle position sensor, not telling it is off idle?
Unplug it and see how it runs ?

Could be the oxygen sensor. When i got my exhaust done i ran it without the O2 sensor for abit, it was rough but not as rough as you say.

If you do end up getting a new sensor go for a good brand. I got a ebay special the first time and it fell apart after a week.

Also check you idle solenoid. Take the hose off and see if air is flowing through at idle.

I smell a timing issues, or a vacuum leak. Sounds pretty close to how it is behaving.

Set the timing for sure, and spray some carby cleaner around the manifold. If the engines changes speed when spraying the cabry cleaner you have found a leak.

TPS is a good guess too.

A lot of this ( http://kick-fix.com/sensors/testing-the-sensors.html )info crosses over to your engine.

There is no timing adjustment on the coilpack baleno g16b's. Its all sensors.

TPS sensor?

Sticky throttle?

All plugs firing? drop a cylinder and idle will lower. Coils good?

Something to do with idle control anyway. There is no air flow but there is an air temp sensor, got that plug for the intake hose?

vss doesnt do much. I ran without one for a year.

wire up the diagnostics plug (it in the fusebox of the original loom).
You can short the plug and it will flash the code up via the check engine light. Mine needed a new cam angle sensor (code 47), now runs sweet.

Check the webiste rhinopower.org for the codes and a 'how to' on the light flash

Hey guys i had a look at my car today. First thing i tried was spraying carby cleaner around the manifold and the engine didnt change rpm, so i guess i dont have a vacuum leak???

I also changed the spark plugs and that made no difference.

When i unplugged the TPS the engine dropped a few rpm then seemed to go back to normal. does that mean the sensor is working?

the air temp sensor connected.

At the moment i cant check the engine diagnostics because the check engine light is not connected yet. hopefully il get time this week to get that going

Ive got the feeling that all this has got something to do with idle control.

Thanks heaps for the help so far guys. much appreciated :)

Also,
when i push the throttle closed (like the opposite way the accelerator cable goes) the engine stalls.

Is that normal?

took the car for a drive today with the TPS disconnected. it runs heaps smoother without it. no flat spot laggy/jerking when accelerating.
i might go to the wreckers and get another see if that solves the problem. what exactly does the TPS do if the car runs ok without it?

the engine is still heaps hard to start after its warmed up tho. i stopped at a servo and couldnt get it started for over half an hour. just keep kicking over and i could hear popping from the exhaust.

and occasionally the starter seizes or something. as its trying to kick over it suddenly stops. then i turn the key again and it fine

You might have to clean your icv as they get jammed with carbon, if you push the accelerator when it's warm does it start then ?

Check your earths on your starter. If that doesnt fix it, you may have to run a relay for it. Search 'clicky starter fix'

Or your starter could be on its way out.

Hmmm that might be it dude. I don't think I have it earthed, it's only got the cable going from the bolt on the gearbox to the negative on the battery.. Il play around with it tomorrow. Starter is ok. Its a brand new reduction type

yeh, using a bit of accelerator seem to make it start a bit easier.
Is the icv normally located bolted onto the back of the manifold? and does it have a vacuum hose going into the passenger side of the manifold

Nope its directly under the butterfly, it has two little radiator hoses that go to it.
Two philips screws to take it out. There is also some star screws on it but i read that if you pull this part apart it can hert it.
