On my jimny there is an arm that swings and attached to the rod that moves the steering, I guess I would call it the actual steering 'pinion'. Make that longer and you should have quicker steering. Probably be a bit heavy though.

oh yeah, just read this again. That must be what I'm talking about ^^^
I only noticed this because it bashes into my cheap-ass steering damper that someone sold me for a Left hand drive vehicle, but my jimny is right hand drive.

I doubt there would be a difference. Dampers are universal. Only differences are valving/stroke/mounting points.

yeah I know. The mounting point is on the RHS of the vehicle right where the pitman arm is. It's for a LHD vehicle. Anyway I had the bracket modified so its okay now.

hey netfitou - have you or anyone actually fitted it to a sierra? be interesting to see the difference in ratio... my engineer would love it cos that box is made for a far bigger car, so its a stronger upgrade.

Alien the problems are that you need an ifs hilux steering box from America because it needs to be from a lhd hilux. Also bolt spacing is too wide for Suzuki chassis so it has to be widened to pick up the bolt pattern they have 4 bolts. Taper in Pitman arm is too big for Suzuki draglink and ragjoint is bigger as well so plenty of mods to make it work.

yes, they are rack and pinion. a longer pitman arm is the best option. look at the torago arm. its got drop and is a chunk longer that the zook. will need a funky drag link though.

Apparently my sierra has a toyota cresida powersteering box in it. The steering is awesome, i'm really happy with it. Dont ask me any questions about it as i wouldn't know the answers. Joeblow built my zook years ago and installed the power steering. He may be able to enlighten you...

My Vit PS runs a tarago drop arm, its still a little slow in steering though, I would like to quicken it. I doubt its actually any longer than a vitara/sierra one.

I fitted a cressida box to my maruti with a jimny pitman arm. nice setup. very light but i really didn't take that much notice of how fast or slow it was.
i really don't think there is much of a problem with most of the sierra or vitara setups. sounds like something to change for the sake of change?

mr.green - how many turns of the steering wheel do you have lock to lock?
ie: turn hard left, then count how many turns till you hit hard right...
the main reason i'm investigating it is to get a tighter turning circle, as i'll be able to hit full lock faster hence shorten my initial turning radius. thats the idea anyway...

I used the cresseda box with tarago arm in mine, it was only about 1/3rd of a turn less lock to lock and worked really well, I used a vitara power steering pump and a custom made hp line.

seriously, it's as simple as learning to apply lock on quicker.
i think you need to asses the way you're driving & the techniques used while steering, think about what your hands are doing. using a combo of 1 hand, crossed arms & shuffling, you should be able to get from one steering stop to the other in not time at all.
i bet you can improve on you steering wheel speed, check out some decent in car rally & drift vids for inspiration.

^^ you're spot on atari, often i realise i want to turn too late to pull it off without doing a 3-pointer... i could certainly turn faster "manually", but a faster box would just help things IMO =)
even last week on a night run i was up on 2 wheels about to go over, i had the arm speed to get the wheel to full lock into the roll and accelerate out of it in time, but gee, if i'd have hit full lock even 1/4 second earlier it'd have been that much less likely to go over...
maybe im just chasing a white rabbit.

Any powersteering allows you to turn on the spot, stopped.
Your lock to lock steering is limited by the hubs and cv's.
Any powersteering will allow you to turn the wheel faster, as its lighter.
I liked powersteering offroad, less bumps, no damper. But, I prefered manual onroad as it was more zippy than the vit ps. Sierra box steering is light. Even with big tyres.

i know that the lock to lock is limited by the hubs etc... im chasing shorter time lock to lock, and im not talking halving it - even the 1/3rd turn mentioned above would to me be an advantage i think.
its about being able to hit the lock faster is all, which would reduce turning circle because you hit full lock faster (again, just a theory).
as i also said above, i have no problem turning it fast when needed, it'd just be "nice" to not have to put in as much effort =)
and i've been driving over 10 years, infact i've been driving my sierra for nearly 10 years.

ten years in the same car. that's impressive, you've gotta start a thread on how long have you zooked for. i thought i was bad, i'm only up to my 4th car & had 3 at one time. time to go for a slide in someone's drifer or a rally car, you'll have a whole new appreciation for dialing lock on.
it would be interesting to see some old in cab footage of you wheeling the powerlines.

Yes it had a 351 and a locked diff and was 2wd but still the responses you made always over corrected even turning 1/18 th of a turn ajsr wrote: longer pitman arm
is the answer less turn to get the same distance moved.
I dont know of a bolt on one but the answer would lie out there somewhere.

BlueSuzy - yeah my sierras steering is light with the 31s moving, but going slow with tyres aired down its probably 10-15kg to turn the wheel.
Atari - i'll do that =) no in-cab footage though im afraid... digicams 10 years ago were crap. infact the earlier pics of my car were taken by my g/f back then on her 35mm canon slr! lol I've got prints around the house here somewhere of some 4wding years ago.
TZAR - yeah im thinking going jimny power steer with a custom pitman arm could be the ultimate answer - power to lessen the weight, eliminate bump steer (mostly) and pitman to shorten the time to hit lock.

I know if doesnt fit the Sierra one, Like I said I used it on the Cresseda box.
From the above thread I gather it fits, Vitara and Jimny too. I dont know about Hilux,
I threw the notes away regarding the diamieter and spline count a long time ago.

I'm doing a bit of thread digging here..
Anyone know where I could get hold of a jimny steering box? Keen to push out that wheelbase with my new ruf!

On the same subject, I'm on my 3rd steering box from a local suzuki wrecker and it's starting to die too. Is there any available new or reco'd that have next to no play? I'm sure I'll never eliminate it entirely being a sierra.
