Why would you want to make a rim narrower?

If it's a steel or 3 piece wheel it would be no different from widening.

I have a set of 16x8's that I want to put some 7.00x16's on.

look for wheel works/repairs in the yellow pages , they will remove the center and put a new rim on.

for the cost of doing that you might as well buy some 16x7's ready to go... arent GV rims 16x7? or something?

I don't think you are going to be able to narrow a 16x8's that far (you'll have to take 3"out of them) because the well will be too wide.

It is hard to go past stock commercial Sierra or LJ 16x4.5" rims for 7.00's

If you want lots of offset, I've seen 16" Sierra rims re-rimmed with lada niva rims.

Yes, but 16"s are incredibly hard to come by in nz. What I wanted to know is how hard is it to do it and end up with the rim being square, straight and usable?

Don't try to narrow the rim by cutting a band out of it.
That is illegal because the welds will fatigue crack.
Find a 16X? rim and cut the centre out of it, fit that rim to your centre.

Lots of tractors use 16xskinny rims.

the only thing to watch with agricultural rims is that SOME are missing the rolled in beadlock just inside the rim lip.
on the plus side they are generally a heavier guage steel than road going rims

but 16X 4.5, 5 and 6 " should be easy to come by

It will crack due to the flexing of the rim.
I don't know about NZ but in Aust. rims can only (legally for road use)have a weld across them to join the band together.
No welds around the rim are allowed.
Welding the centre into the rim is allowed but only as stitches.
Laws were enacted because of the number of wheel failures after widening/narrowing.

some of the landy rims had a deep well that would allow a 15 inch centre to be put into a 16 inch wheel.

Also try mullins or other wheel manufactureers for rim bands ( cannot for the life of me think of the correct name) as they used to sell a 16 inch wheel that would take a 15 inch centre.

Or you could just get some Suzuki wheels and bolt them straight on.

LJ had 16x4.5
1 litres had 16x5 and a some others sierras had them too. mainly utes

I would add that it is NOT something for the home workshop amateur to try - A very specialised job indeed best left to the pro's.

You will have to measure and make sure it will fit though BEFORE you buy.
