I've seen the document and my neighbor who is a cop says the same, but doesn't book people for it cos he is into 4wds also.
Not gonna look for it now, but it's true. Unless you can control it from the cab it is not legal.

everything is illegal if its interpreted incorrectly.
i see know logic or have heard no factual argument to show how or why an auto locker would be illegal.
also the company would have to state its illegal to run them on road going vehicles, just like wheel spacers. etc.
you cant just base an argument on "i have a cop mate and im right cause i say so"

Also some trucks pass yearly roadworthy inspections with detroit lockers in them even in qld with its fantastic rules.
Still a grey area so I wouldnt take the advice of billyflog on a forum I would ask a INSPECTOR for your state, employed by the state transport department not an \engineer

I saw it. I read it. Then afterward asked him If he was aware of it.
What it says is, and LOCKING diff must be Able to be controlled from the cab. LSD doesn't lock. I dunno about the locks on your doors but mine don't open if you push hard enough, it's either locked or it isn't.

the problem with legislation is, the people enforcing it arent certain of the rules and regulations properly either, just take the young fellas "cop" mate for instance. when being told something is "illegal", always make sure its factual and not said persons interpretation or what he "believes'.

Dunno where I saw it. Which is why I haven't posted it up, otherwise I would have first up.
I stumbled across it and went "Hmm, wasn't aware of that." then got on with my life.
I run an auto. Plan on running a spool. I don't give a shit. Its still the case. Believe me or not I don't care.

A quick bugger around on the Queensland Transport site, only give me this document:
http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c792a ... icles2.pdf
On page 6, it says no welding. Other than that I currently cannot find anything else on diffs.... (other than the mod code for a diff swap).

all i no is that my brother got his Detroit in his falcon over the pits here in WA without any prob.
i guess it depends on how it handles, if it bucks and moves the car around a bit then i doubt they would pass it. but you never know.

Part time locking differentials permitted provided they can be controlled from the drivers seat. NCOP doc as posted above. That's what I read. EAD

Yes, but the O.P is in QLD (Cairns), so NCOP is no use to them.
Anyway you can control an auto locker from the drivers position. Back off the throttle. Once you have, the device is unlocked (unless its set up wrong).

It's pretty hard driving around doing small maneuvers while you're backed off the throttle but.

if the law says that you can control it locking/unclocking from the drivers seat (which it does in the NCOP, even though it says part-time lockers only) - technically by the letter of the law you CAN control an auto locker and an LSD from the drivers seat purely via throttle control... its a thin argument but it works.
either way, its obviously intended to read that airlockers or jeep style lockers which are physically operated via a lever/button are ok while "auto" lockers are not.
how manufacturers get away with LSD would be that there's not a simple on or off like an auto locker, rather it slowly engages via the clutch setup (depending of course on how it is set up).
perhaps someone call call their transport authority tomorrow and find out for sure?

jrzook..............all the tracks north of Kingsborough are now nearly gone, the stations no longer doze their fence lines for fire breaks.
The tracks to the left of the old Reedy St George crossing are in a bad way,but with the price of gold,I'm sure someone will get a dozer in there soon.Try the first road into Maytown if ya fancy "wheeling":Not the White's Ck road, which ihas been graded for views of the end of the Wolrld next yearf.

if that is the case, i dont think you could make that argument in court. i just dont see that it would stand up.
but i really dont see how they would tell.

yeah i know, like i said its a thin argument and the document has clear intentions. But you're right, when the inspector takes it for its test drive, if its not locking up and cracking the shits under "normal" driving (or clicking, indicating it has a locker) then im sure it will pass.
when mine went over the pits they jacked up each front wheel and spun and wobbled it, and also jacked both rears and did the same - if i had an auto locker or welded diff they'd have known then without even having to test drive it though.

Mines a daily driver,
I never have a problem in maneuvering round car parks,
or anywhere else, even with accelerator pressed on.
Can lock it up if I plant the foot, but otherwise I don't feel it.

Yes, i know it is possible. I have an auto locker.
Let me rephrase.
It's pretty hard to park or similar without your foot on the accelerator.

I've got a rear auto locker in my Vit and I find it very easy to park or turn tight with.
I just adjust my driving style for it. On a roundabout I back off just as I turn in sharp then I accelerate once I'm almost out of it.
I kinda learnt how sharp you need to turn to make it lock and if I can swing wide in a roundabout I do.

Wow There's Alot of Crap everytime someone mentions auto lockers alot of crap gets said im sorry dude but do some reading .. seach old stuff
there is nothing wrong with auto lockers if u are on a budget and cbf spending 1k on a air locker that does the same thing for u .. at the end of the day lockers do the same things the only difference is Air u can flick a swich to turn it off a auto is a Ratchet effect and can someone not unlock some people eg me have there auto lockes set up farily ..well and dont notice it to much the only time i will notice it is if i put my foot down around a corner the whole idea when driving with auto in the rear is to coast around there corner to then put the power back on .. if u do that u shouldnt have a problem ... auto lockers in the front can be a pain in the ass because u can not steer with hubs locked to well unless u fit power steering ... the way i look at it 2 x auto lockers = 500 bucks 2 x air = 2k ish for you guys have a problem with my post and told me not to get auto this is what i say love my auto lockers

power steering still doesnt fix the excessive understeer of a front locker... air or not - if the front is locked it will want to understeer - the advantage of air is you can turn it off to regain steering control. im sure its not something that would happen often, but as you know, the times it would come into effect would be the time you most needed to turn! lol

Interstingly I find my Sierra steers better with both diffs locked, than it does with just the front locked. I have no idea why this is!
