So I'm looking at buying my first Suzuki and still cant decide on which model will suit better.
Looking for something I can hit the beach with but can also drive between Geraldton and perth at a decent speed. Comfort is not a biggy but my mrs wants air conditioning. Of what I have read the 1.6l engine in the vitara is heaps better than the 1.3l sierra engine, but are the vitara's as capable off road?
The question has probably been asked a million times but I couldnt find any threads. Any help would be awesome.
Cheers
Shoey

For 99% of the 4x4ing people do. the Vitara is capable enough.
If your going to use it for road driving the Vit is the vest bet.

I think the Vitara is more suitable given your situation.

Vitar = milion times more comforable, have owned both, cant fathom why i wasted my time on the sierra, (that said it was a brilliant car but was like driving a horse and cart compared to the vitara)
Vitara with solid front would be the winner

Lots of people say stuff like that, the answer is that you have obviously only ever been soft-roading because if you had been pushing your sierra to its limits offroad then you would be disappointed with the vitara offroad. As has been said most people wil never need anything more than a vitara which is nice to drive and more than capable for the terrain that most people will traverse.

Quote: it all depends on what you want to get out of the zook as to which one to buy. For example if you want to play hard in the bush and aren't worried about drivability on road then get a sierra. however, if your a latte sipping metro that loves to cut hair and talk with a lisp then a vitara would be more suited to you.

That thing looks s#!t hot. Love the flares and dont mind the bar work. Usless front bumper, that wont stop a roo must be yanky.
Me I will probably do a basic 2" lift, AT's, bull bar, rear bar and some drawers. Not to over the top but good enough to take it a few places. I'm not a hard 4wder just want it to go camping and not kill me on fuel. At the moment my 1982 HJ47 Troopy costs me $70 to fill up and I only get 350km's (if im lucky) out of the 50L tank.

I wouldnt get to excited about fuel efficiency. . . Although my sierra was brilliant on fuell. . could have had something to do with the carbie beeing stuffed and not letting the engine have any, but it was brilliant on fuel even with 235/75 r15's but my vitara. . . yeha 13ltrs to the 100 around town, 2ltr engine, circa30" mud tires 3" lift (more so just over 2" if you acctualy measure it and remove height gained from tires) roof cage and side awning. . pretyt well every mod you do makes fuel efficiency wrose. unless you counter it with extractors decent system behind them and a snorkle. . but mines a sv420 so could be a whole diff kettle of fish now couldnt it.

Shoey,
I was in a simular boat to you. Just down-sized from a Jeep Cherokee to a Vitara- both 93 models. The little Vit cost next to nothing to run (compared to the Sherman Tank Jeep) and goes places the Jeep doesn't even fit. On the beach the Vitara leaves it for dead. Got a JLX wagon so there's still enuff room for camping gear etc. Only mods have been bigger tyres and now a 40 mm spring lift is on it's way.
Fuel comparison. Jeep 15 LPH. Vitara 9 LPH. I would imagine fuel-wise a Troopy would be worse than the Jeep? Over a year I'll easily save over $1000 on fuel. You'd probably save more.

are you accounting for the speedo & odometer being out due to the larger tyres?

My 1.6L 16V Vitara used around 9-10L/100km before the 31"s went on. Now it uses 11-12L/100km. So economy really isn't what it should be for a 1.6L.
I've just Played around with the timing and tuned it to 98 octane fuel, so i'll see how it goes now.
But I think I'm putting my extractors on tomorrow, that'll probably make it worse again though.
So yeah point is, don't expect amazing fuel economy, but it will almost definitely be better than your troopy
Cheers

^^^ where do you fit a gas tank in an X-90?
A Very valid question ...a 75ltr tank "shoe horns" into the trunk (25cm so clearance between rear panel walls) .. right above the rear axle ...I've found this location actually really holds down the rear end when moving quickly through round abouts & turns - Pirelli 5's help too - but the additional weight of the tank really offsets the twitchiness of a SWB 4WD at speed...actually engaging 4WD in the wet & "running" multiple round abouts (5 over about 3.5 kms with some slow down "S's" thrown in.. has had a XR6 flag me down to find out "what I was running" since he had trouble keeping up. Thankfully it was not the plods (:..the little beastie just handles fine at speed now ...& would handle better a little lowered ..but then would not be as good off road...= dilemma. I've been looking at the lowered spring set on EBay
Very kewl to have these for daily driving & revert to standard for the beach weekend. Oh... I still can fit one trolley of shopping in the boot with the tank, plus the Targa glass (I'm going to set up some extra padding & bungie straps for these - as they sit on top of the LPG tank)...as other X90 owners would know (less than 400 of us in OZ nowadays) - I can still get another trolley load of goodies behind the seats... You do have to give up the spare wheel ...replaced by a can of sealant. repair kit, air pump & NRMA towing for city driving...I still need to decide on a rear truck or roof mounted spare exo frame for going bush...

Just a word on " a vitara with SAS would be perfect"
It's quite possible a vitara with a SAS would drive worse than a sierra. Many of them are pretty loose because the owners are chasing the hektic flex. Part of the reason vitaras are so much more comfortable is that IFS front end. Replacing it with a heavy, softly sprung live axle isn't the ticket to excellent road manners.
In any case, a well built IFS vitara front end might be better than a live axle off road.
Steve.

I agree with Steve.
I think most off road improvements = less on road manners.
It is all a compromise, as cars are generally.
But thats the choice we have to make.
15 years a Sierra owner (LWB medium mods), daily driver,
I had no big complaints on or off road.
Not had the Vitara (LWB) long enough to have a serious off road opinion,
but even with lift, lockers etc, it still very nice on road.

SassyX90, I use LPG too, but i'm running it 100% straight. Is there a reason why you startup shut down with petrol, or it just because you can?
