Tzar has already pointed out by running a retread you have no idea what life the tyre has already had and up here in qld at least where we have terrain that requires some thought to drive tread pattern means less and less, the rubber compound is what gets it done.

I'd hate for somebody to suffer a blow out cause they are already running pretty low pressure in a tyre that spent 10 years on an old 60 series that never moved and was hurt cause somebody on the internet said they are ok on a sierra

No, we have a number of members that put lots of highway Km's/Daily on Mongrels.

From my experience, it's quite hard to break in tyres on a Sierra. They're so light. I'd be happy to use a carcass that's spent time on a heavy car, it least it will flex as well as possible.

From the ignorance of your statement, it's clear you know stuff all about our terrain so I think you better put that to bed. I didn't realise the dirt, rock and clay was so different in QLD, but there you go.

People buy retreads because they can't afford or justify the new tyre they want. Mongrels put lots of largish, luggy tyres on sierras when their owners would have otherwise been stuck on flogged out second hand tyres or 30's and smaller, and I've never seen one fail. Would I put them on a 60 series? No. There's lots of other tyres I wouldn't put on a 60 series either.

I was quite anti Mongrels when they came out, but having seen them work for years, I think they are quite a good solution for a sierra owner.

PS, Do retreaders really use 10 year old carcasses? You're not just starting an internet rumor there are you Royce?

Forklifts run solid tyres, also road profilers, asphalt laying machines, some straddle lifts etc etc

You need a press to put the on. We had a 300 tonne press to mount these

They can weigh up to 400 kgs a tyre for the bigger forklift tyres 1400-24 sizes

Yes I did.
Mine was a daily, and a hardish core driver.
2 never gave any troubles.
2 had slow bead leaks, so I fitted simex hd tubes.
I'm re-reading this thread, because tyre time is coming,
and my money tree has run out.
A Vitara is heavier, and I planning longer outback trips,
as well as local hardish stuff, so not sure a remould is wise.
Especially as New tyres like couragias and maxxis are getting cheaper.
But have been offered a very good deal on some remould mudders,
so am thinking trailer or car.

I have Insa Turbo 7.50/16 on the LJ50. Actually would have preferred proper tyres but try getting a 7.50 agressive lug that isn't 14 ply these days! They'll do the job on a light vehicle that won't do more than about 80kmh and grip really well on rock and mud. They're only 8 pr so still flexy enough. But they're VERY soft and I doubt they'll last long. If I did highway work or had them on a heavy 4x4 I'd be sure to use something else.

what insa turbo's are you running on the LJ? i just scored a pair of the special track simex/silverstone copies.

for a set of cheap retread play tyres, they drive on the road pretty good apart from the noise, at 100kph they track straight down the road with zero vibration/wobble through the steering wheel.

I was thinking of getting those in 235/85/16 for the LJ, they look like they are about the size the 85/16 should be! I think I'l get these, they'd actually be legal too.

Are yours stiff? I think they were available in a 16" as well, but buying them sight unseen off the net I was worried they wouldn't bag on an LJ.

dunno who made them, but one of our farm hack LJ's arrived on the farm back in "88 running a set of old 16" retread bartreads and 2 of them are still alive! the ones that died kinda melted when some chemical stuff got on them and the rubber fell apart.
Admittedly they never got much in the way of high speed road use, or overly heavy loads, but they are constantly in use.

I always thought that retread/remould tyre sales were killed by them being reclassed by the taxman as new tyres- instead of second hand
(new tyres copped sales tax, second hand stuff didnt back then)
There used to be several retreaders around Perth where you could take your pre-loved tyre carcasses to and they would retread them for you- at very attractive prices for a perpetually broke apprentice like I was back in the good old days.
