My inbound engine has a compression of 9.5:1, so during break in I want to use the highest octane petrol I can before I switch to LPG @ 5000Ks.

What's the highest available at the pump? Will this be a safe bet on a slightly higher comp G16?

9.5 to 1 is still a low compression motor.

I thought for a gas build 11 to 1 or higher was the go, 9.5 to 1 is pretty low.

Shell used to have higher than 98, vpower. Unsure if they still do?

Civic under vtec used to sound different, more barky like sound, but no seat of the pants power increase

I am pretty sure some BP servo's sell 98 octane as well- fuelwatch website might help with locations.
You could (maybe still?) also buy 100 octane fuel specifically made for motor racing- from several shops around Perth.

Do any stations still sell avgas?
There used to be a couple around Perth, but its been years since I played with that sort of stuff, home brew fuel is another option- but you really need to know what you are doing and its not an easy option as some of the stuff is a lot harder to get nowdays
Benzol mixed with nitromethane or nitroethane is one type, or methanol is another.

A few years ago, methanol was way cheaper than petrol if you bought it by the 44 gallon drum- it was so bad that lots of petrol stations were caught watering down thier petrol with methanol until the federal govt. put a tax onto methanol.

AFAIK only japan has higher octane ULP at the bowsers than us. 98ron is the highest octane readily available ULP in australia.

If you want higher octane you will need to buy race fuel. Get ready to spread your butt cheeks.

Stock is 8.9:1, so 9.5:1 is only a mild bump - an easy enough fix without major internal upgrades. I can safely go to 10:1, but above that you really want a guarantee of the RON you are putting in your tank. I don't want troubles if I fill up with a lesser quality fuel... there's no guaranteed RON rating with LPG after all.

methanol has less power per cup then pump fuel that's why motors that run the stuff have buckets for carbies.

factory compression for my bike is 13.5 to 1

even better with a touch of castrol R added to it 8)

our home brew benzol/nitro smelled pretty good too, but I felt sorry for anyone behind me in traffic- the exhaust fumes made your eyes sting and nose run before long, probably didnt do thier paintwork any good either- and I found later it might put lumpy purple blotches on your kidneys and rot your boots 8O

v power is only listed as 98 octane same as BP ultimate.

There used to be a 100 octane pump fuel (I think it was Shell) but it is no longer sold from memory.

Avgas is a pain in the ass to get unless you are mates with someone dodgy.

I doubt you would need more than 98 octane for 9.5 : 1

According to the United servo's website I just looked at, they sell 100 octane premium fuel at the pump, as well as the usual 98 premium, 95 and 91 octane stuff.

Check your local United servo, and you might have 100 octane locally available!

Methol Benzine does wonders mixed with 98. Used to run it in our trikes.
Next best thing to AvGas.

Will only boost your octane a small amount. Once you reach a certain threshold/percentage you won't see any more gains.

The trick is to run the LOWEST octane you can whilst avoiding detonation.

We have a Caltex that sells E85, and a couple of guys at the small hangers at the airport sell avgas.

Dunno much about octanes. My old man mixed it. But the difference was chalk and cheese.

But AvGas was terrifying..

There is a BP place in Newcastle that has MASSIVE fuck off big tanks of fuels.
We used to get AvGas from there.

I was originally planning on running gas (low butane, high propane LPG) in my buggy here if I ever get to build it, but then I found out how cheap I can buy avgas for (<$1/L), and now I have a new plan. ;)

I've been tempted to try it in my heep, but I don't think it will do any good in a big ol pushrod motor.
