Theres a couple of ways you can go about this.

A 2 inch bodylift, or extended shackles with longer shocks, or a 2 inch spring lift with longer shocks to suit. All these options will enable you to run 29's or 30's. Personally, i would choose the spring lift with longer shocks.

29's...... Hammer the seams in your wheel arches flat and space your bumpstops a little bit. Or hammer your seams flat and fit a 40-50mm lift.

30's...... Same as above, but the lift will be pretty much manditory. You may have to trim the outriggers that hold the front bumper on also, but this depends on what offset rims you are using.

Thanks for the info, I like the idea of a spring lift and hammer the seams,
With 30,s do you need reduction gears, I do not intend to go extreme

I dont know what you would really call a 29" tyre but the common size for a '30"' tyre is 235/75R15, perhaps on a stock rim

That size will fit fine with no lift and nothing worth worry about in the scrubbing department

It really does help. You can get by without them, but its so much easier to drive with some better gearing. If you are on a budget, search for a 1L sierra transfer case with the 4WD switch on it. Just swap your drive flanges over and slap it in. You'll get a 12% gear reduction in high range, and a little bit in low.

Otherwise, get yourself a set of 4.9:1 gears from Lowrange.

A 235/75 R15 is at best, 29". Most are under 29".

EDIT:

A 30x9.5 R15 is equivelant to a 241/79 R15 ( not a real tyre size of coarse )

I run skinny 32s (7.50 16) with just a body lift, hammered seams and bar mount trimmed so 30s shouldn't be a problem if you do the same. Gears are 6.5s.

and a 31x10.5R15 isnt 31" either, you dont think this constant use of misleading sizes on teh internet doesnt help to confuse n00bs into poor deals at tyre shop you decide the guy has no idea?

235/75R15 is considered the metric replacement of 30x9.5R15 in most catalouges, which somewhere along the line got internet bullshit altered to yeah 30's will fit a sierra with no mods and then oh they must mean a tyre that measures 30" which means I can get something marked 31" on there fine so then we start threads with hey will 33's fit with a 2" lift, afterall they are only a little bit bigger than what will fit stock

Alot of it is to do with tyre pressure too.

And I guess rim width plays a big factor too.

I run 235/75R15 with no lift and a 1L transfer case. Pretty lowly geared is a good inroad compromise.

I looked at allot of 235/75s and the average size is 28.8". Mine measure in at 28.6.. People would have to be stupid to think there equivalent to a 30" tyre.

As for gearing, im on a stock transfer and 1.6, and still really need to go lower.. On a 1.3 with stock gears they would be shit on anything that isn't flat.

I get it. You are saying that every tyre is undersized. So some people are using indicated measurements when giving advice and others are using actual measurements.

I am glad that I started this thread, obviously I am not the only n00b (as ROYCE calls us) that uses this site.
I am just a confused old bugger,
I do appreciate all the help or not that has been forth coming.
Thanks

Manaroo, I have 235x75r15's on my Sierra. I originally had 2in lifted springs only. The tyres rubbed the seam at the rear of the front guard and also rubbed on the bumper outrigger. These were bashed and ground down respectively. I also had about a 25mm bumpstop spacer on the front.

Now I have removed leaves and the springs sit flat. I've also put in a 1in bodylfit. Bumpstop spacers have been removed, there is no rubbing.

I also have 4.16:1 transfer case gears. I used to think the gearing was ok with the larger tyres. As soon as I put the lower t-case gears in, I realised just how shit it was. Gearing is now back to stock :D

My 31's (30.5" OD) with 3.7 diffs and the 1L transfer is bearable to drive on road, and over all is okay offroad. But reduction gears are a better option if you're able to.
