Hey just got my engine reconditioned and have noticed it is running a bit hotter than usual when i drive for over about 30 minutes around town. Not coming close to overheating just not sure if its because of the new parts. Im about 150km into running it in?

P.S. New waterpump, thermostat, flushed radiator, Belt-driven and thermo fan seem fine?

Where is it sitting on the gauge?

well it used to sit slightly below the middle in the overall gauge, meaning it appeared dead centre in the working engine temp lines. Now it sits in the middle of the overall gauge, sometimes a little higher. Dnt really have a point of comparison

It should run cooler as it loosens up a bit.
did you fit a new thermostat??
if so was it the same temperature thermostat?

Thanks, no idea i will hav to ask my mechanic. Thermofan does however seem to be waiting a bit long to switch on

mine sits fair smack in the middle of the gauge while driving.

It cycles slightly while sitting still at idle though, which you would expect it to do..

For peace of mind I would get it checked with a thermometre, as a gauge is not always correct.

Thermo fan??

It goes a little above half way till the viscous fan does its job then moves down to a little below halfway.

ahh i see. that is exactly what mine is doing. thanks for the peace of mind.

Just a random question would will it put considerably more stress on the engine driving say glass house (providing i keep the revs down) compared to driving it on the street.

not sure if i should wait till its broken in before i do some wheeling

OEM Gauges are a Really Crappy way of Judging what temperature your car is running at.

89 Tintop has the right idea. Get one of those Laser thermometers and drive it round, when you notice it heat up, pull over and check out the temp.

The other thing is, they may have replaced the Temperature Sender in the rebuild. If they replaced it with a non-genuine, they have a tendency to read differently to the Genuine ones. (made of different grade metal, therefore has a different temperature coefficient)

All things you need to Ask your mechanic.

It will put more "stress" on your engine.

When it comes to running an engine in everyone has an opinion on how to do it. I like to drive mine normally (i drive a short distanceto work, but alot of stopping at lights, so revs vary alot). varying rpm and speed if sitting on the highway or idling for long period of times.

I have wheeled after rebuliding the engine in the sierra I owned. Same thing never left idling for long or revving the ring out of it.

If the temp sender has been replaced, then it could very well be the difference. Be it an OEM or aftermarket variety.

Temp senders for coolent are always a thermistor, and while can be very accurate, uncalibrated they have a typical margin of error in base resistance of 5-10%.

You should check for an air-lock in the coolant system. When my coolant has been drained I run the engine with the rad cap off until the thermostat opens and then the air usually comes out.

my gauge sits a whisker over half way.

When you remove the rad your supposed to keep it wet inside so the scale doesn't dry and loosen.
