Do you see this an issue for the engine reconditioner?
Do blocks not get crack tested these days?

My Oath! Take that shit back and Get it Fixed under warranty!
Reconditioned motor = Brand new motor (with a little less metal)
Q. Do brand new motors come with cracks in the block?
A. No - so take that shit back!

Get yourself some new jocks for this one...
After picking the engine up you could say there was some, issues.
14th August, 2011.
To ----,
On the morning of Wednesday 10th of August I picked up my Suzuki G16a engine that had been reconditioned by your company -------------
Upon receiving the engine the presentation was fantastic and I was given the remaining gaskets that were not needed for the reconditioning.
On the afternoon of Thursday 11th August, together with the help of a qualified mechanic begun preparing the engine for installation. During this time it was noted that an Allen head grub screw was missing from the side of the engine, this screw was vital as it was a seal for the oil gallery. We stopped the installation at this time.
The morning of Friday 12th August I came into your workshop and informed an employee of the problem. A search went on for maybe 2 minutes and all other spares from my engine were presented in front of me, minus the said screw. At this point I was advised to purchase the screw from a local fastener store. I left your shop and went straight into Bolts and Fasteners and purchased a screw to suit.
That night the installation continued and was completed late Saturday afternoon. The installation was quite long as both myself and my mechanic are meticulous on getting everything spot on.
After I was satisfied that the installation was completed and all checks were done the engine was finally started. As soon as the engine fired it held a rough but steady RPM idle. Not 20 seconds of the engine running was a loud banging noise heard from the front of the engine. The engine was shut off immediately. Shaun my mechanic advised that the noise came from the top of the timing cover indicating the cam sprocket. We then proceeded to inspect by removing the top bolts of the timing belt cover and pulling it back slightly. Straight away we could see that the cam sprocket was crooked on its shaft and had moved forward significantly.
We then proceeded to gain access to the cam sprocket by removing all belts, crank pulley and engine fan. Apon removing the cover we were greeted with metal shavings on the cover itself and a cam sprocket wobbling on its shaft. The cam sprocket bolt was then removed by hand and the sprocket was taken off. It was noted when removing the sprocket it had excessive damage to the locating key in the centre. The part was now not suitable for service. The crank shaft locating key was left undamaged. Luckily I had a spare engine and we proceeded to remove the cam sprocket and installed it onto the engine. We then proceeded to put the timing belt back on, set tension, install cover and add all accessories that were previously removed. Again, all checks were done to ensure the engine was ready for its next run.
The engine was started and again showed signs of rough running but steady RPM idling. The engine was shut off after 30 seconds running and again the trouble shooting began. Obvious item first to be checked was the spark plugs. All plugs were in good condition except for the plug on cylinder no. 3. The plug was completely covered in clean oil. The spark plug was then cleaned and installed on the ignition lead and was tested for spark. The spark plug was producing excellent spark. The spark plug was then installed again and the engine started. Straight away the same symptoms of poor running were noticed and the engine was turned off immediately. No.3 plug was then removed and again was covered in clean oil.
At this stage and to much of my disappointment we decided not to continue working on the engine as I felt this too could be an symptom of poor workmanship. The screw that was missing when the engine was picked up also had a slight leak. I then thought best to wait until Monday to seek your assistance.
This was handed to the owner in letter form aswell as the fucked cam pully.
I was calm and proceeded to organise a solution between the two of us. I certainly was not happy to remove the engine again and take it in to him. He said it is in our warranty that the engine be removed by me. At this I nearly lost it. I said leave it with me I will speak to you this afternoon.
I called Consumer affairs half hour later and they advised me that the Mechanic will take full responsibility of removing the engine, repairing it and installing it again. They said if he does not come to the party I would have to take him to VCAT. All I wanted was my engine fixed. I spoke to the engine rebuilder again and he said I need to take the engine out and bring it in. I told him about my chat with consumer affairs and he said "its written in my warranty". At this stage I thought, fuck it. Ill remove it again and just get it fixed. Thats all I wanted.
So once again I removed the engine and took it in for repair. 3 days past and the engine was again ready to be picked up. He said the valve lash on no.3 wasn't set and the inlet valve was not opening thus pulling oil past the rings.
I installed the engine again, another 6 hours due to my anal nature. Now this.
Hows that for one fucked up experience?
Anyone else feel like swearing now? Fuckit!

Take him to VCAT. At least you will be able to get him to either fix it, or your money back.
Sorry to hear about your troubles, when i had my engine rebuilt, the guy there has only a couple of people there.. and he was great to deal with. a little more expensive than most but Well worth it, Penrith Engine Services if anyone is looking for a good Re-build.
Once again sorry to hear about your troubles. its hard to find good help these days

Yes different mechanic, how can this happen to one person? One car?
All this bloke does is engine rebuilds. He has a large shop and employs 5 people. His main business is building drag car and race engines. God help them.
Is my Suzuki Cursed?

Thanks stocker, and Atari. "Although Shepping" is not on my list of things to do at this stage.
I will contact both the Engineer and VCAT tomorrow and start the process. I will let you know how I get on.
Now where'd I put that welder?

mate that seriously sucks major B*lls, by the sound of it at least you have a second form of transport or dont need the car everyday. but i would be taking it back again and letting them fix it at all costs, you shouldnt have to pay a cent.
did they replace your water pump/oil pump/timing belt etc? and did you have to supply anything?

thats horrible dude... i think youre best to be rid of them and get your money back through other means as well as the cost of replacing the block (which of course cracked due to their dodgy workmanship, right?).

How does poor workmanship = cracked block? They could have done the right thing and pressure tested it, and it's come up since.
I would suggest trying to source a block yourself, and trying to get them to come to the party to prep it and assemble your motor. With you fitting it to your car.
Bit of messing around, but the most reasonable outcome. If they don't want to come to the party, then attack em through VCAT with the "I tried to be reasonable and fair with it all" As soon as you start attacking them by saying it's their fault fix it, they will get their backs up and a resolution will almost be more painfull than it's worth.

The crack would have been there before alien but was probably that gummed up with shit it didn't show as a problem.
No thanks Shakes. I'm not pulling the engine a third time.
I am well and truly within my rights to have them cover all cost incurred for the removal, repair and assembly of the engine. As stated, this was the case the first time but me being and a little bit sympathetic pulled the engine myself.
Ok what if I didn't know my way around engines? What if I had paid a mechanic to remove my engine and install it two times already? Prob $1500 in labor? But hey I'll pay a mechanic another $1500 to remove and install again because I'm a nice guy. Hey I might even shout a new block $400 while I'm there. Na thanks.

Put the shoe on the other foot...
"This guy installs our motor, overheats it first run and cracks the block... Now he's calling for us to replace the block AND fit it into his car. Fuck him he's being a pain in the ass and demanding heaps. We wont do anything and take a gamble if it goes to court..."
(I'm not saying thats what you've done just how they would be thinking)
I agree its far from the best outcome for yourself, and will cost you some money. BUT rather than having it dragged about for 12+ months and have no engine it may be a compromise worth considering to potentially save alot of hassle.

i was referring to his court case not what actually happened... meaning due to their lack of attention to detail you've got a cracked block.
