Trying to figure out when I cut the rear guards up how legal it's going to be.

My zook scrapes in the 1st of July 88 so no side impact ADR. I did spot that doors need an internal and external handle which was handy for my half doors.

Was stewing on it if it would be considered a structural mod or not as I'm planning on taking out a reasonable amount of inner guard too (all of which will be replaced)

I'm sick of trying to digging around the ADR's and hoping someone here can enlighten me.

you'd be better off phoning the local transport authority, and once you do find the person who knows the rules (good luck) get their opinion, and if it is in your favour ask that they address it in writing to you.

the other option is to go past the people who would inspect your car after a defect and ask them, cos lets face it, theyre the ones that are going to let it go back on the road again =)

I should of bookmarked it. One I read the this morning refered me back to the ADR for what is/isnt allowed.

Have since found this... http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonl ... 0/VSI8.pdf

Which says any modification to the occupant compartment needs a certificate. Other than a sectionalised repair. (page 4 section 10)

Bugger.

heh, was planning on it.

And Alien, I've been down that path before. In the end I've ended up back trawling through the various websites and finding my own answer or paying top $$$ to an engineer for what he'll sign off.

In reality if you put a grinder to your car without engineers approval, It's technically illegal.

From an engineering point of view, virtual lift is perfectly acceptable on a sierra because the guards are not structural.

This has been the feedback from a number of engineers in Vic.

They have obvious rules about not putting tube in to close out the inner guards where it might punch through the firewall and impale you in a crash etc.

This is NOT hearsay, It's directly from the engineer.

Bugger.

But it also says: "A sectionalised repair "cut and shut" carried out in accordance with VSI No. 25 is not considered to be a modification. "

That's essentially all you're doing for a virtual lift isn't it??? Then just re-attaching the flares a little higher up...

What will be interesting is, if the NCOP does go into force nationally, how will this effect virtual lifts? The vehicle ride height is measured from the centre of the axle up to the guard.
If the copper, or transport officer that pulls you over, gets out the measuring tape, you might be pinged for a massive lift, when you are actually close to standard height.

Only if you have an engineers cert for the car though. It's theengineer who is qualified to determine that your virtual lift isn't structural from a legal standpoint, not you. For RWC or from the cops perspective, it's a modification to the body of the car and therefore illegal. (at their discretion)

I am talking about reworking wheel tubs etc here, not a tap with a hammer.

Thanks, will be cutting to fit 31's with no lift.. Might be worth going to chat to one before I back myself into a corner, was planning on RUF and 1.6+auto (on top of seats, tires, brakes etc) once I've either blown the motor I have or I can drive the car in it's current state to it's limits. Have seen it's much cheaper to engineer everything in one hit.
