Hey guys i just bought a 92 mod sierra 1.3ltr and it has a 96 Transfer,
Ive been told that you can not get reduction gears to suit this transfer.

Just wondering if anyone knows if this is true and if not where can i get them.

if you cant get them ill just look out for an original transfer.

If it is a gear drive transfer case there are no problems. 1996 was the change over year. the chain drive coil case isn't a straight swap so you'd have to be keen to screw up the gearing of a WT to bother with a coil case in one.

If the shift pattern is like this:




Then it's a gear drive case, and you are sweet for gears.

The coil shift pattern is straight though (it's not a J shape)

Awsome thanks heaps for that mine has the J pattern.
The guy i bought it off said it was the 96 chain driven transfer but i guess not.

u sure about that shift pattern steve? cbzook is a coiler transfer and it is a J pattern. and im 99% sure mine was to before i got gears.

my 97 coily has the j pattern it had work done when i bought it, so i don't know if it is original or not.
i hope its a leaffy case ...more info boys !

I'm 99.99% sure the pattern is different from the Leaf - it doesn't have a neutral or somehting? Hmmm - I used to have a coil case here but I threw it out.

Sorry if I've misled anyone - I was sure there was a difference.

Should be able to tell them apart from this:

The coil case is much skinnier through the middle (between the input and outputs) as there's only a chain between them.

Jonno - the leaf transfer in your pic is a non-4WD light case (early 1.0) It looks quite different to a later case.

your right... however for the purpose of the pic it works..

also notice it was in my coiler for about a year... useing wt shafts and all.

Someone did some trick work to make the flanges work then

yeah apparently a prev owner of the case was doing a mashinest course at tafe, so he built custom flanges as a project! got top marks 2.. a member on this form still owns the case!

So have checked and it is the chain drive transfer with the J pattern,
So now wondering if they would of had to change much to do this, im thinking of just buying a Gear drive transfer and changing it back so i can get the reduction gears or does anyone have a better idea.

I really need the reduction gears and im running 31's n the thing goes like a dog.

To clear up, all sierra transfers had a 'J-Pattern' shift.

To interchange the coily and WT transfers, the jackshaft, and the case itself changes.

The mounts transfer are the same. The 4x4 light plug is the same. The coily case is a little slimmer at the top so the jackshaft length changes. The flange holes on the coily case are tapped. The flanges on the WT case have holes for a bolt and nut.

Oh and maybe the shift knob gets a little prettier with the coily case as well LOL.

If you get a WT jackshaft you should be able to change over the case in a couple of hours easily. The gearing will improve also and your speedo should become more accurate - the stock WT case has lower gears as the coily has 3.9 ratio diffs instead of 3.7.
