Give this guy a call, he can fit and mod plate the tether point and also tell you if it can be done. I assume you mean a Sierra?

geeeez i dunno if i'd put a baby in a sierra... youngest i'd allow in mine would be around 4yrs old (toddler seat). Sierras are wayyy to jarring and properly unsafe in a crash.

my old sierra hardtop had the anchor points and a intrusion bar in the back door,
i wouldn't consider a baby seat in a soft top jobbie however.

Yes, they do have a rated point on the back of each of the 2 split rear seats. I have 2 seats mounted in the back of my hard top, I'll take pics of the mounts on Monday if your interested

Yeah, I checked with the car seat installer at the workshop of the place where I bought the seats. The seats are retained with not only the anchor point, but the lap-shash belt as well, as both my kids are still young enough to use the full harness on the child seat. I totally agree about kid safety, and am planning to put a roll cage in it soon, but I will be getting someone else to make it, coz I don't trust my welding skills

Hey guys,

I'm a qualified baby seat fitter, and I urge anyone who has fitted their seat themselves to get it checked. It's scary to think that at least 70-80% of child seats are installed incorrectly. Some of the shit that I've seen, I just feel like slapping the parent across the head.

If you are having a fitter install it, watch closely and ask as many questions as you can, because chances are there will be some point where you might have to swap the seat into another car. Knowing how to do it will save you $$. In saying that we don't charge for checking, and personally If I see the guy has had a go at it and done an ok job, I sometimes don't bother charging. Really depends if he or she a prick / bitch. If they say, I just wanted fitted, that's when I charge.

If you are installing it yourself, you will need a gated buckle so you can turn the retractor seatbelt into a lapsash belt. There are typically two types, the little black one with a hump is what we use.

Just a few tips.
If you can buckle the seat belt in, chances are you've done it too loose. The trick is to put your body weight into the seat so it sinks down into the seat, just when your strugling to get the buckle in, jump up and down a few times and the it will clip into place. Don't worry about damaging the seat, you won't. (unless your a fat prick)

Technically you can have no more than 1" of movement, but the way I do it, when you shake the seat side to side, the whole car moves. That's when I know it's done right. Sure leather seats are a bit trickier but can still be put in very tightly.

People tend to think that the anchor point is what prevents it from moving, well not exactly, It's more to keep it in place. The lap sash belt is what stops it moving in the unfortunate event of a crash.

You can have the anchor point relocated, however it does have to be done by an autharised engineer.

Another misconception is that after 6 months it's ok to turn the seat around to forward facing. Well true, but really depends on a few things. Well first, I say, keep them in rearward facing for as long as possible, It is much safer in a crash. Now to turn the seat around, usually your child will let you know, they will whinge, cry and carry on becasue they want to look out the window and look around. Generally at about 6 months they do that however it depends on a few things. Basically it comes down to how well the child has developed, for example a 8month old that can't keep their head up is better off in rearward facing, If a 4 month old "big boy" future footy player sized baby can, well they can be turned around.

If you turn the seat around too early, well it may result in the child having spinal problems later in life. Why? you have to think that your childs head will move back and forth when you accelerate and brake, perhaps at least 50 times in a 20min trip.

The other tip I can give, is make sure the harness belts are NOT below the childs shoulders, they should be above. And that the child eyes must not be above the headrest.

If you have any questions regarding installing seats, I'm more than happy to try and help out.

BTW any car manufatured after '85 (i think) have to have at least 2 child restraint points. And they have to have an arrow pointing to them in the owners manual. That's the law according to Aust. Design Rules.

Good stuff !!

Well really it is safer, because the childs weight is being evenly distributed through the seat / capsule, and there would be MUCH lesser chance of injury to the child.

The only problem being that it may be not be socially acceptable. What I mean by that is when mother's get together they kinda brag by saying, well my child got turned around at 5 months, why is your's still rearward facing? when in actual fact their kid may not be ready to be turned around.

Like I said, each child is going to develop at different ages, It depends on how developed the child is, which determins if they should be turned around.

If the kid is pushing themselves out of the seat, whinging and can hold their head up without flopping about, that is when it's ok to turn around. I have actually refused to turn seats around even if they are 7 months old but the kid is still the size of a pea. But I have turned them around for a 5 month old maori baby. But I always say keep them in that rearward position for as long as possible.

I've actually been in a couple of little arguments about this topic, All I say is "I am an autharised fitter, I fit at least 10 seats a day, I don't want to put your or anyone else's childs safety at risk, If your in an accident above 50kph It may result in your child dying, and I definitly don't want that to happen"

that's when they say, oh ok

but at the end of the day, It comes down to educating the parent, If they still want it turned around after exaplining that, well that's their choice. And I charge them the full fitting price :D

A sierra is only a slight step up from a motorbike in terms of occupant safety.

LOTS of info on the goverment websites, Basically a capsule has an anchor point being the seat that it clips into. Then the seatbelt as said above does the majority of the holding of it.

and good luck, your in for a hell of a ride! :helloo:

We kept our daughter in the capsule until she was max weight as she's a shorty.

We also kept her facing backwards as long as possible until she went above the weights recommended for the seat.

and you must have a little-un? My girl is 13 months and just under 10kgs.

Just for future referance to others, I can show you in a Vitara, It may be different in the sierra.

Anchor point installed.
Image

Other anchor point location
Image

Anchor bolt kit and Gated buckle.
Even though most cars already have anchor points installed you will recieve an anchor bolt with your child restraint, but the buckle would cost you about $7 (I guess that's how they make that few extra bucks off the customer)
Image

And just to give you an idea, this is how to use a gated buckle. (I will try to get a seat on monday and show how to install it correctly)

First grab the belt and join them together. The buckle should be placed as close to the fixed side of the belt as possible as not to interfere with the child restraint.

Image

Just so it's easier to adjust, I put the hump facing up and feed the belts through the opening.

Image

Feed the other side through. The retractor side of the belt should be on top, pull it to make it sit tightly on the buckle.

Image

Feed the belt through the back of the child seat.
Put your knee into the seat and push down with your body weight. If you clip it in too easily, re-adjust the top belt through the buckle.
Repete process until you strugle to clip the seat belt in.
Make sure the teather strap is straight and clip it onto the anchor point.
Tighten the teather strap and very impotant!! make sure the left over teather strap is wrapped up. It has happened before and will happen again, It may get caught under the tyre if dangled outside the car.

if your car is registered you have TIO insurance as they are the compulsory third party insurance provider.
TIO is also owned by the NT government.
