Guys,

Started installing my trail jimny reduction gears into my 09 jimny yesterday, all was going fine until we couldn't get the front input flange off the transfer case. The nut the holds the flange on is one of those nuts with the little locking tabs, i opened them up but still could not un-do it.

Dose one have any idea's how to undone do it?

We got the rear out put flange off with no issue's, but the front is not playing ball.

We have tried a large breaker bar, rattle gun( a very weak one, i think if i had a stronger one it might undone the nut maybe?, impact driver and still no luck.

I'll will try upload pics of what i mean......but photo-bucket is not working for me atm.

I dont know if it is but have you tried doing it up, ie left hand thread? if not get a better rattle gun

Yeh tried that, i think a better rattle gun(which i don't have) will do the trick.

I had to use a very large breaker bar( 4 foot long i think?) and heat from a propane torch.Heat will expand the nut, and hopefully break any corrosion or thread locker that may have been used by the previous installer.

You can drill a couple of holes in some flat bar and bolt it up to the flange to hold it still, and use for leverage. I have known people to use bed rails from a cheap bed frame for a breaker bar as well, shoot they can be 6ft long, and that is allot of leverage. Something will give.

Even though you have the locking tab bent out, try to pull it away form the threads a little more, sometimes the installer gets a little overzealous with the locking tab.

My rattle gun and compressor are really good, but the one I removed was a tough bugger.

I will try the flat bar idea when my mate get's here to help me. How much heat did you put onto the nut?

I've ripped those nuts off a few transfers now, and only ever do it by hand.
1.5m length of 50x10mm flat plate, with holes drilled in it to suit the flange PCD.
whack a couple of bolts through and put it on the ground.
socket on a 1/2 breaker bar, with a 4foot piece of pipe. and CRACK! off she comes.

Gears are in the case..... i didn't have a press to get the old bearings off, so i brought a small bearing puller....but then found that the little arm things that go onto the bearing would not fit in-between the gear and the bearing. So out come the grinder to hack some of the back of the hook off so it could fit between the gear and the bearing . I was then not sure how to put the bearings back on the shaft, but soon figured out that the bearing puller could put them back onto ........ then i was doing up the last little bolt on the 4wd engage motor and then....crack snapped the bolt head clean of. So i will have to wait until tomorrow to get a new bolt.

I am also a little worried that i have not the motor in 'fase' (what ever the fuck that means??) , with the forks that engage 4wd. I guess time will tell.
