Ordered a new box today. Should be here end of week. Swap it out and see if it's the box. If not i've got a set of reduction gears on their way here so she'll be sorted then. I'll keep everyone posted and put up a video of the sound so if anyone else has problems like mine they may find the answer.

Just replace all the oils in diffs, transfer case, gearbox as they became water contaminated for 2nd time in matter of weeks and howling noise was groing, also added nulon gear additive, noise has deminished but not gone.
I think some damage has occured.
Gearbox specialist swears by the nulon additive, so hopefully future damage will be minimised.

Now to stop the water getting in!!!!!

I dunno how. I've got diff breathers and the like. Might give that a look tomorrow. Replaced the gearbox so it's safe. My 6.5 gears should be here next week. Problem will be fixed that weekend.

Haaaa so sludgy. Definately contaminated. Just put new oil in it and it's helped. Off to repco to get a tube of nulon.

How'd you go with this? did you end up getting it sorted when you put your gears in? My coily is doing pretty much the same thing :/ just makes a whining noise whenever i'm giving it power.. if the clutch is in or its in neutral it doesn't do it (regardless of how fast im going) but as soon as i so much as touch the throttle it makes a really loud whining noise :/

Just tested a few things mentioned - it doesn't make the noise when the transfer case is in neutral and the gears are engaged, it stays at the same pitch regardless of which gear you are in (3rd, 4th, 5th,) its only noticable in 1st and 2nd if you are under load or going up a hill, 3rd 4th and 5th its noticable all the time - even more so when i'm only barely touching the throttle.... can anybody tell me what would most likely be making the noise? Cheers in advance for any answers :)

Sounds like it could be the same thing as i have. Dry bearing/grinding/ howling type noise. I only get it when going up hills and I let the rpm's drop below 2000-2500. Don't really notice it in 1st gear or when in low range (probably going to slow), very noticeable in 3rd and 4th on the road. Also get it when going down hills and I let of the accelerator and the rpms drop (engine braking).

I think mine must be thrust bearing or something related to the clutch cause as soon as i push the clutch in the noise stops. Plus my diffs have been professionally rebuilt with new bearings and lockers and i rebuilt my transfer with new gears and bearings and the noise hasn't changed. Gearbox oil has been changed twice in the 3,000 or so kms i have done in the car and it has always come out very clean.

hey myles, It was the intermediate shaft in the transfercase. The cage bearings had fucked out. The 6.5 kit comes with a new shaft. Made it all good :).
