Finally decided to pull the engine out and rebuild it. Is it worth doing the head up for performance or will it not give any noticable power increase? Will be adding extractors as well as i understand they help a bit.

when i put extractors on my sierra, it wasnt any more powerful as such, and the top speed didnt increase, but it did seem to be much smoother and able to rev more freely. just felt much nicer to drive...

I'm currently rebuilding a g13a too, I'm not really touching the head much other than to lap the valves in, but I'm regrinding the cam for more torque and mid range, as well as extractors. Will be interesting to see what, if any, improvements I get

depends what carby u want to run..
i rebuilt my g13ba,, bottom end rebuilt too factory spec as there was next too no wear in the bore, new pistons, pins, master engine rebuild kit from (suzisport) $650 included absalutely everything..
i had the head rebulit with new exhaust valves, reground cam, mild port job.
$400
with standard carb and exhaust was better but no great difference in power..
then i put a webber on it with a custom ported original manifold,extractors,2" exhaust,hi flow cat,, and wow what a difference, i can do line lockers with 31s and std diffs lol holds 100ks on the h,way no worries

so what im sayin is if u plan on runin std accesorries than do a basic rebuild,
but if u want power gains then modify the head and get some good bolt ons

oh yeah u can use toyota parts for the top of your dizzy as the pick up points are 4x wider.

p.s I SMOKE VITARAS LOLLOL

just tidy up the head a bit and put a better cam in, like every engine the cam makes a huge difference as a stock cam is a compromise between performance and econ

with smaller engines its not so much about bigger is better,,

the trick is geting good unrestricted flow and matching up intake, timing, exhaust.
thers alot of overhang from factory castings that disturbs the flow thats why porting heads, manifold is a good idea.

vitara= 1.6 carby 5.1 diff gears
my sierra= 1.3 carby 3.7 loooong diff gears
and il do a vitara gear for gear,, u do the math

hope this helps,,

wow kewl :) thanks for that info il work it out later  or just take your word for it when i jumped in my new zook it felt alot faster then my mates 1.6 on take off but it could be all wrong because its on stock tyres .. cant work out why speedo is out though maby its because of diffs maby hes changes the ratios ?

another trick is if u got the standard carby, take out the choke mechanism (butterflys) then put no 2 ( secondary) fuel jet into no 1 and drill out the secondary jet (from no 1) and pop it in secondaries.. but make sure u drill it straite.. makes a notisable difference on take off but u lose a few revs..

i would of done a build thread on my engine but at the time i didnt know of auszookers. and a second hand 1.3 was like $900 from a wrecker 8O

If you have flat top/high compression pistons available, they are well worth it. Mine had the HC pistons, and a weber, no header, no porting, nothing else.

it took off good, but when it hit the power band around 2.5-3.5k the engine would flat git it. I got a lot of comments on how fast it was, and I had no problems running down the road with 33x12.50's and just a 4:1 case.

Anyways the pistons are like $99.00 here, and if the engine is torn down anyways that $99 is well worth it.

Pulled the engine down a bit today. I was thinking of getting the master rebuild kit from low range, or if anyone here can supply it pm me. Thinking of high compression pistons too, is any thing else needed to run h/c pistons?
Unsure on what to do to the head yet, still deciding on what mods to get.

Check out partsdinosaur if you are going to buy form the states. These guys are honest, and an old school mom&pop store. They have a very good rep.

You can also call Zack Lee at zukiengines.com he is the best builder we have, and is cool enough to give you some advice even if you do not order anything from him.

I referred a guy to him that bought a fully dressed 1.3 just because he good, and he called me up and gave me $200 to spend in his hop anyway I wanted, to thank me for the business I sent his way.

The dinosaur link.

Just read on lowrange site h/c pistons add 1 pound of compression. That doesnt seem right, thats bugger all gain. Are they worth getting or better off spending more on the head

I don't know if there is more than one type, because it made a HUGE difference in mine compared to stock.

Aside from the comments this is how I felt about my engine, I had no urge, or need to upgrade to a 1.6 with the 33 inch tires. I figured I might go to a 1.6 when my current engine died. I ran across a 1.6 for $300 so I sold mine for $500 and went to the 1.6

The guy who bought it has told me several times how happy he is with it.

I imagine with a proper cam, header and fueling to match it, it would be flat out.

Ok Looking at parts dinosaur there are two types, one set is called High compression but are still slightly dished, the other are true flat top pistons and provide more compression than the first.

They are the set on the right that are $88.60 at parts dinosaur.

dont want to knock ur suggestions on bigger "high compression" pistons,,
but the gain bye doing that is f****all compared too porting and matching fuel,spark,exhaust.. 1.3 bottom ends arent strong to say the least, so extra pressure on the bottem end isnt a good idea,, if u want more cubes rebuild a 1.6...
suzisport kit includes,, new pistons, pins, head gasket, water pump, all main and piston rings bearings, timing belt, every gasket possible,, and if your nice ,they will custom make a kit to suit your engine.. i was in mackay at the time and they sent everything for $650..

thats couse givin there age most of them have allready had a rebuild.
"quote" when buying a sierra if its at 200,000ks more than likely u will be up for a engine rebuild.. u might not have heard of many, but everybody complains of how powerless they are,, THATS BECOUSE THEY ARE FUCKED AND NEED A REBUILD.. :D

They may be a little tired, most small petrol engines are after 200,000km... Not broken though, as they would be if they are "weak".

G16s however, I know lots of people with cracked blocks on G16s...

Well then describe your example of 'weak' as you related it to bottom end stress due to HC pistons which implies that they fail or are prone to failure in stock form...

Many yanks are running the HC pistons and are having very good runs out of them. Have yet to hear a story of HC pistons killing the bottom end.

Skyman you heard of any issues as such?

You many know engines but you have bizarre logic to prove any point relevant to this topic.

So again why for your example is a 1.3weak and a 6.0 strong?

Since when were we talking about 'bigger' pistons?? We were talking about HC pistons.....Obviously you would re-bore up the next size to get rid of any oval but we would be talking about 40-80thou maybe. I wouldn't consider the oversize pistons 'huge'

instead of helping this bloke why dont u guys just railroad his thread and start ur own conversations

Um, maybe we are helping.

Maybe our opinion counts just as much as yours? Ever consider that?

One minute you are saying bigger engines are stronger, the next saying keep the 1.3 don't go 1.6? How the fuck are you helping?

Many yanks are running the HC pistons and are having very good runs out of them. Have yet to hear a story of HC pistons killing the bottom end.

No I haven't. Most rebuilds done here are because they are worn at 200+k

You always hear of smoking 1.3, because they have had the doors driven off with the stock motors. These engines routinely do 200k without any bottom end work.

The only reason they need rings at that point is because, once they switched hands to guys who 4by, the maintenance is neglected. Yanks are not known for regularly changing their oil, just adding more

I have not heard of one single engine that was built properly loose a bottom end over standard sized H/C pistons. These pistons come stock in the later model EFI 1.3's and the 3 cylinder Suzuki engines, so both style of HC piston are an OEM part.

IMHO for $88-$99 it is silly not to put in H/C pistons during a full rebuild. You can still run pump gas and they are reliable. So why not get that extra torque and HP if all it requires is a piston swap? Aside from a header it is one of the simplest ways to gain torque and HP in a 1.3 engine.

I can truly say you will notice the difference in the seat of the pants. Combined with a head and cam the H/C pistons make the 1.3 a decent engine for a Sierra with bigger tires. IMHO if Suzuki stayed with a 13 in a sierra this is how they should have been built.
