Hey all,

Im fairly new to the 4wd world, and tomorrow I am taking the vitara off road with a work trip.

Im a bit nervous as I am getting a high idle of 1500 and it tends to splutter sometimes until you really step on it.

It is a 1.6l carb engine and I do plan on pulling off the airfilter can tonight and giving it a good clean with some carby cleaner

Is it a common issue? Any tips on how to adjust idle screws etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

IMO, don't touch the carby cleaner. Check correct operation of the auto choke first - sounds like it's partially stuck on.

My bet is you have an auto choke problem (very common).

There are 2 small water hoses at the rear of the carby. These should both be as hot as the main radiator hoses when the engine is running - i.e. hot when engine is hot. If they aren't - they are blocked.

The water passage for the choke is very small and easily blocked not allowing hot water to circulate past the auto choke and disengage it. Also, the small water hoses can block up or collapse in on themselves as as well. Remove the auto choke water hoses. Check the internal structure of the hoses. If ok, try connecting 1 hose back onto the choke and blow air or water from your garden hose back through the choke to clear it. You may need to push some small wire or a very small screwdriver in there to help clear the blockage.

Put hoses back on and check for leaks and correct choke operation.

Also check your radiator is full, if the level drops you can get the same probs due to no coolant getting to the carb

Yea I did check that, Will do a coolant flush as well, is coolant flush recommended or is that pointless?

Do the coolant flush BEFORE clearing a blocked choke - dislodged dirt helps cause the blockage.

I would like the coolant system capacity so i can work out how much radiator flush to use.

Does anyone have a manual for a 91 vitara?

Okay so I did a flush and put all new coolant in, still doing the hunting at idle from 1.5-2k

Took off the two back hoses and noticed the hose towards the drivers side (inlet I believe) was heaps clogged.

Used screwdrivers/drillbits to clean it out to the best of my ability but still idling high, changed the clamp to one with a phillips head screw as it was leaking.

Also I loosened the idle screw towards the front of the carby underneath and managed to get it sitting at about 1.2k on idle without hunting.

I still think the choke is blocked pretty badly and gona try flush it out with some compressed air and water

Used air compressor and hose to clean out choke, I am definately getting coolant flow through there.

Still is idling around 1.2 mark though and now seems to be over heating :/
