Holy cow.... The old Man's got a pair of them in the shed from his datto 1200 (with 1400) ute..... He reckoned they would be too big for an F10, so I had started looking into using an SU off an 1100 mini... :?

I might need to go have another look :)

I had a single on mine when I got it and it went OK - Nice simple carbie to maintain and they never seem to die on you.

38mm = 1 1/2" it will be fine.

Using only 1 I presume.
Not sure the old man would be happy if I seperated them... That said I am not sure he would be happy with me using them!

Maybe he can run the 2nd one on his F8.... its close enough to the same motor.

I'm guessing you would have to run a long accelerator cable, and loop it around the engine bay and over the tappet cover so as the throttle pulls in the correct direction? The Datsuns being set up for a non crossflow head, and hence having the opposite pull direction to the F10's Aisin and F8's Mikuni...

Stock F8 Mikuni for comparison:

OK wow, my photos are not very helpful in what I am trying to say...

I was toying with the idea of using the 1 1/4" SU off my 998 Mini, Never got around to doing anything though.

Are F8a and F10a carbs interchangeable?

Pics are not much help at all but I kinda get what you are saying. In the end after all the fab work you have already done, sorting out an accelerator cable will be the least of your worries :D .

Now when will it be fitted so I can come round and have a play?

LOL. Yeah my photography skills are akin to a baboon playing with a disposable camera
I have to fix miss break-allot Tara the princess mobile first. Then when my air lockers turn up the LJ will be in bits :P . Then if I can convince the old man its a good idea, I might have crack.... so 2017?

I don't know fellas it doesn't really make sense to me, if 2 of those carbies are designed to run a 1200cc engine then 1 of those carbies should provide enought for a 600cc engine.

The problem with multiple carbies on a suzuki is always going to be the manifold. The fact that the thermostat housing is part of the manifold and that water jackets run through it makes it way more complicated to fab up than most manifolds.

As far as I am concerned there is nothing wrong with the standard 1 litre carbie, they are simple, reliable and work well.

I hate mine, hence my constantly looking at other options. Mine floods on corrugated roads, and it hates steep hills. I have put kits through it, I have rebuilt it probably about 3 times, I have played with float levels and fuel mixture. It is just horrid. I prefered the 1.3 Carby on my Sierra, far far more reliable (just really sensitive to having the fuel filter replaced regularly). If I could attain the reliability people seem to get from the downdraft LJ50 carburettors I would be over the moon!!!!!

I agree on the multi carburettor thing. It looks way to fabrication intensive to bother. For the amount of time and money, EFI on the F10 would probably be easier.

No need for multi. A single 1-1/4 1-1/2 SU style carb is all that's needed.

2-stroker: Those carbs are constant velocity (variable venturi) type. The keep air flow speed optimum for good fuel emulsification and act a bit differently to a standard fixed venturi carb.

With the 38mm CV carb the actual venturi size isn't 38mm all the time, it will only be at 38mm when there is enough airflow demand from the engine. Thus at idle the venturi size may only be equivalent to 10mm etc.

What this offers is very crisp throttle response as well as making it virtually impossible to 'over carb' an engine.

Now compare 2x38mm/1400cc to say a stock g13a which has only a 26/28mm throats, overall flow of the 1.3 is wayyy down even tho the engine is capable of 7k+rpm and is only 100cc smaller. The reason for this I believe is to keep throttle response at a premium even down at the lower rpms since its a fixed venturi carb.

Note that the g16 did come out with a Hitachi 44mm SU style carb at some point in overseas markets. Not much info on it but these were the superior carb of the Suzuki setups.

my 1 litre carby runs fing great. i've done nothing special to it, set the float as per manual specifications, stripped it down cleaned it all and tuned it by ear/feel. they're quite a simple carby and I think they are quite reliable. even on big angles/inclines/declines/high revs/idle...... does it all well.

Yeah, sorry Highway-Star, should have clarified that. Just one carb is used.

The English-made SU were, how do I say this, English-made. When Hitachi copied/developed/licenced the design, they put in bucketloads of good 'ol Japanese quality control to make a far better carb than the original SU. Works at all sorts of rev ranges and angles. Bolt pattern is slightly larger than the F10A carb, but it's just a matter of ovalling out the holes for the studs to fit.

LJ80 manifold has slightly smaller stud spacing again than F10A.

Amen to that! These carbs are very well made!!

Yeah I know a fair bit about these carbies, anyone that's seen my LJ will know that I have been running a set of twin Hitachi's just like that pic from Highway-Star on my LJ for over 20 years.

Dan I'm pretty sure 2stroker has an entire A15 Datto motor in his LJ. From what I have been told, it has plenty of go

Ah that's right! Thought he was implying that he had the carbs on a zuki engine.

Anywoo chop chop! Get a carb to play with!

They were a great carb, plenty of bottom and top end could be achieved from these carbs. I think they produced more HP then a multi EFI.
