So if you pinch the fuel return line do you get over 40psi? I'd take my 20 bucks now and use it to find an internal fuel leak like royce said pumps work or they don't so if pinching the fuel return doesn't allow pressure to build above 40 than I'd pull the tank out and look for a leak from pressure side of pump on inside of tank or if pinching does allow pressure to build than i'd look at pressure reg

we put the guage on the inlet hose to the fuel rail.
im still not 100% the guage is good, was an old guage. so im going to make a makeshift pump with a jar, some hose, and my air compressor to see if i can get the fuel reg to open that way.

Was the gauge connected with a t-piece inline to the fuel rail inlet ? Could the car be started with the way you had the gauge set up?

So the pump works, it builds up some pressure between the pump and fuel supply line under the bonnet excluding the fuel rail and pressure reg so fuel reg isn't causing the problem of low pressure. There must be a leak in the tank if its not pissing fuel out from under the car, some pumps have a pressure relief valve, this could be leaking or there is a crack in a plastic pipe or part of the assembly inside fuel tank. Can anyone back me up here?
The fact you said it can't even hold the little pressure its creating after the pump stops is telling me there is a leak

i would put it down to a fuel pump..

as gman said the pump will have a pressure releif valve in it.

dont have any details on them but can get them tomorrow for you.
they sell aftermarket coils, sensors, injectors all that kind of stuff. and majority of the time when you get them they are genuine parts anyway.

just a suggestion, if in doubt start at the manifold and remove one peice at a time, clean it and reinstall. rinse and repeat till u get in the fuel tank. It's long and tedious but you can diagnose any other fualts as well. good to hear it wasn't the crank pully pin.

An EFI fuel pump isn't anything special. As long as it fits, can flow enough and is of high enough pressure it will work.

The fuel pressure regulator (one on the fuel rail) will only start to let fuel back to the tank once the required pressure has been reached, you have found with your dodgy pressure gauge even with the fuel pressure reg isolated by sticking the pressure gauge straight on the supply line from the pump and tank. That's why, the pump can't produce enough pressure either due to a fucked pump or leaky system as mentioned above

ah of course, it all makes sense.
well once i get some empty jerry cans ill drain the tank and have a squizz at the pump. all the lines look ok. Once pump is disconnected ill blow compressed air down the line also.

ok fans,
after a LOT of mucking around i got the tank out on my own (get help if you plan on doing yaself)
got the pump assy out and dismantled as you see here
(easy to do)


and the only thing i could spot wrong with the whole thing was this.

i dont think it was sitting in its pipe very well either.

so there you go. now to find a new grommet and see if that fixes things.....

hope so. just rang zooki, they dont supply the rubber bit (typical) so no luck there. ive got the assy back together and jammed the pump up there a bit better, it practically fell out before. considering taking off the filter and putting a generic 3 dollar inline filter from supergays in.

might try pirtek or an o-ring place

google the bosch part number on the pump and see if it doesnt lead you to a seal somewhere

the filter is the little teabag thing. looks pretty useless.
I might buy a new one anyway as it would protect the pump and put an inline in the engine bay...
