Just wondering is it alright to put 98 octane fuel in these old motors or just stick with the orginal unleaded

98 is the best you can run in a zook. Crank the timing up a few degrees and enjoy the (barely noticable) extra power.
It will start easier and should get better economy.
98 used in a car designed for say 91 will do NO HARM at all.

x2 Jas is on the ball.

Octane rating has to do with how the fuel burns and how controllable the burn is not how it destroys seals

you completely missed my point.....the fuels structure is different, and from several mechanics i know recommend that you use what the motor was engineered for.

Off car subjects was a lawn mower shop that strictly says nothing over 91 as their engines were coming back leaking oil, same principle with 4 stroke though...

or just go put av gas in it, she'll be right mate

I very much doubt they would sell fuel that would eat thru rubber seals/hoses, seeing as you can only buy unleaded now...
I do know that 95Ron has alot less Sulphur in the fuel than 91Ron, which tends to form crappy deposits inside the engine...

Do you mean to say that the 2 stroke mowers were coming in leaking oil

I run 98 octane in all my cars, especially the WRX because that is what it's tuned for. I even run my john deere lawn mower on 98 octane :) (simply becasue that's whats in the jerry can)

Yeah they guy at Barnacle Bills told me, but not my local one said that his supplier had spoken to the guy that puts the lids on the little tartare sauce tubs that the boat that they use to catch the squid had the hooks from the fishing lines had been repossessed. They were still going squidding, but just with out hooks so the catch numbers have been significantly reduced compared to normal so technically they're still trading & the stock levels haven't been depleted yet. I'm not sure if the guy that told me was a bloke or a chick & it might have been in Queensland but I can't remember right now, so I'm going to call the WA head office & have them call my local Barnacle Bill to confirm that the guy that puts the lids on the tartare sauce still works their & actually said what he said.

Isnt' it the 10% ethanol stuff that eats the seals?

E85 will clean all the shit out of your tank and clog up your fuel filters, also will perish OLD fuel hoses fast. (I really hope no one uses this stuff in their mower). Great for Turbo fast cars useless in ours. Maybe this is what they were thinking of? 98 ron with timing adjustment makes the dream of overtaking in my Suzuki a possibility.

My Sierra would not idle properly, or pull low down with 95 or 98.
I was told by a motorbike racer that they often had same problem on carbed bikes.
Some carbies have too smaller jets for the denser fuel.
Anything efi should run better on 95/98 tho.

Could all be crap,
but my Sierra ran best on 91, and ok ish on 95, but crap on 98.

Ethanol fuels are a problem with rubber bits when car not designed for it.

Just my observations and opinions gleaned from many sources,
I not a scientist or a mechanic.

Did you modify your timing to suit, if not that's why. Carb ie jet size has nothing to do with it.

PS. Zooks are made in Japan.
Japan has been unleaded for a long time.
All Sierras were designed for use with unleaded.
Even says so in my 1983 1.0 Litre hand book

then why do suzuki recommond that you can use Ethanol blended fuels in their cars. E5 is in the owners manual

And sinker boy, drewwithsomecrayons, tetra ethyl lead is a tiny bit different to lead sinkers. google it. Auctually google "simple retarded fuckstick" and look for yourself. or save the eletricity and just look in a mirror.

I hate these fuel fucking things that come up once a month.

(jet size was just the bike racer mechanics opinion,
had to believe someone)
Yes I messed with timing quite a bit.
Was no benefit, and fuel cost more,
and at the time wasn't very available when travelling.
So tuned to 91 was more sensible.

This was a 1.0 litre engine.
When I fitted a 1.3,
I never bothered trying anything but 91.

Some countries, like Brazil etc,
the cars imported have to be able to use ethanol based fuel,
be nice to know if all of the produced zooks were suitable.

Seriously man you gotta stop getting your facts from sssierra. Different chem structure yes, got nothing to do with eating your seals or making your mower leak oil (please explain that one :? ). The higher the octane rating the higher the energy is required for ignition hence increased flash point and immunity to pre-ignition.

Where have you read in a manual to use 91 RON etc or less or you will occur engine damage? Usually says minimum octane requirement is blah blah.

Higher octane fuels can and WILL destroy certain seals and rubbers in certain CHEAP motors.. All you people in here saying old mate is wrong should do some more research... It may not be common but it happens

(For the record I sniffed copious amounts of fuel when I was in the army as it was my job, so I may have forgotten a thing or two....)

Do you have some tech on how/why to share? Imma interested. Back to the OP question in which I assume its a g series engine does that constitute as a cheap motor? And what sort of seals are we talking about? WHich engines have you had this phenomena happen to in the past?
