hey all, just wondering what size battery everyone is running for their second battery in a dual battery system in a 1992 sierra, i want to run a slightly bigger battery than the stamdard battery, but am a little unsure of the size constraints, thanks matt

Depends on where you put it I guess. Is the current one the standard size small Sierra one? Are you upgrading that as well? What about alternator upgrade??

I use a Redarc soleniod and a 750CCA Supercharge (Primary is a 650CCA Supercharge though)

Doesn't every body use a deep cycle battery for running cool stuff? Like camp lights, engel and the like?

Some of those supercharge batteries have a very good amp hour life We use them in our trucks at work, unfortunately they go flat from time to time because silly people leave the flashing lights on, our auto sparkie is very good and usually replaces all 4 batteries, even though they are only 6 months old. Bit of a recharge and they are like brand new

haha good on you fellas i have an upgraded altenator, and a redarc solenoid coming at the moment and want to upgrade both batteries, i was looking for the maximum dimensions of the batteries i can use, length width and height as my workshop sells a huge selection of deep cycle batteries for all earthmoving gear so the only thing i have to go off is dimension and post location

An N70 is a little too big to fit on the passenger side but might fit the drivers side with some mods

N50 is about as big as they go, most trays seem to accommodate the normal 8" Commodore size battery

but why dont you exercise some free thinking and get a tape measure and see what battery will fit

thanks royce, i was intending on doing that anyway, but a little bit of a baseline is good to determine where i can start from

I moved my fuse box on the drivers side a few inches forward and fitted a 57 high performance centuary. Have a n70 to go in next for winching, pass side i moved charcoal canister to left. Weight is the problem, n70 must be altleast 4 times as heavy as a standard size.

Is that even possible??? I thought the battery was just a storage for electricity?? And with a winch or spotlights the Alt would burn out even with a bigger battery??

2 x N50's in mine with a simple continious duty solenoid setup to link/seperate them.

Maybe one of the smart people can word this better.... A bigger battery can take a larger load for a longer time than a smaller battery, yes it will eventually run out of juice but not for a longer time than a small stock battery...

Yeah I get that bit.... but how does your alternator cope with the charging?? does it smoke?

Works fine... Shouldn't be an issue until the battery is so flat your relying on the alternator alone.. And I wouldn't want to spend that long in it If I was winching I would look at a alt upgrade. I drive often enough with out everything turned on anyway, battery stays nice and charged..
