welding with gas is awesome, like a smooth bj
using a glassless mig is rough and painful, like giving a biker a bj.

if you can afford gas - do it. I really regret buying a cheap welder.

Cheap migs are ALWAYS painful, like driving your Zook on the rims. Best description of a 100a gassless mig would be a great wall with only 1 spark plug. You could get a 2nd hand Lincoln 170 for about $400.

Are you saying that bikers these days might be less rough?

I would love to get a decent capacity gas mig, but am running on a cheapskate budget- and with the way BOC slug for gas- I couldnt justify spending that much.
Also needs to be compact and easily portable- running out of space in the sheds for toys.
I have a fairly simple repair to a floor to weld- about 8" square, a tailgate to bodge up, a windscreen frame to invent, real basic seat frames to tack together, but both front guards are beyond me to fix- so will be buying repro's. (its an old CJ3 jeep project)
I have ripped off all the boy racer junk off it and am trying to get it back to original CJ3B/ M606 appearance.
once those jobs are out of the way the welder will probably only get used once or twice a year for fixing landyacht bits.
I need another more bigger-er shed

Find a mate that has a bottle, offer him beer to borrow it. you only pay hire on the time you have the bottle, and with that much you will possibly only use a disposable ($30 + $30 for the reg)
I really really struggle getting a nice neat consistant weld with gasless - MIG I do just fine, could just be me?

that might be the way to go,
just found out my step sons dad has a bloody great big industrial mig gathering dust in his shed that I can borrow, just need to find a way to get it here from Gooseberry hill, and past the missus without her seeing it
then off to BOC for a disposable bottle, and all the fun of teaching myself how to use the thing!
note to self..buy more spray cans of paint
sounds like a plan to me.

Don't know Steve, as I said, it's not my thing. No experience in this area.
What about dykes on bike, but then again I'm probably not their type of thing.

all sorted, 3 x 9kg?co2 extinguishers, 4 x dry powder about the same size, 3 x 9 litre water- (which after the halloween retaliation will need refilling again), 2 fire blankets and a bunch of 1kg dry powder extinguishers around the place,
and the tub is removed from the chassis, and stripped bare- so nothing left to burn apart from paint- and any fab work is done on top of leftover hardieflex so I should be safe(ish)

the only problem you have with these is if you need any gear afterwards it is hard to get tips and stuff like that especially if you are learning you will porb go through some if you get a mig get some thing witha euro fitting and at least a benziel gun or how ever you spell it that way you can get stuff for them from your local welding shop. trade tools range seem to be going alright for cheap gear and they all come with benziel guns. and if you want a small one get an inverter

the first one of the migs listed does have a euro/binzel type fitting and gun if you bothered to look.
the migstar 250 (1st listed above) is a good honest machine I use one for my site welder.

In my experience as a fitter and turner, a gassed mig welder would be the best pick of the lot. And where cig are shit is beyond me, we only had these in the workshop and never had a single drama with them. That and a mate of mine has a workshop called Megacycle and he only has cig welders in there. Buy what you can afford mate, and only buy what YOU'RE happy with

Hi Guys,
Thought I'd just throw this in. The transformer on my unimig 200 blew a couple of weeks back. After pulling it down it looks to be a manufacturing fault to me. There's what looks to be cardboard insulators under the windings. Where it blew that insulator was folded up hard against the windings. The windings had shorted through the laquer at this point and melted. The insulator wasn't folded up like this at any other spot. It had had a very easy life. It would be lucky to have done a weeks worth of work.
It may be a one off but the service tech didn't want to hear anything about it being a manufacturing fault. All he wanted to do was send me a $500 replacement. I'm going to try to get it rewound somewhere closer as I'd hate to see the shipping on it from Melbourne. The transformer alone has a fair bit of weight to it. I'm wondering if I'd be better off spending the $500-600 on a second hand lincoln etc.
I see there's a lot of positive reviews for the Uni's so I thought I'd post the issue up. I must admit other than this one problem it's been a good mig otherwise.

sounds like the problem with the unimig is the after sales support
he could have at leat listened to your story a bit better instead of just shooting you down, IMO the extra money you pay for a decent warranty can be worth it

Well I fixed my Unimig...... And for anyone interested here is a pic of the blown windings on the Unimig transformer. Basically that bit of black insulator you see was folded hard up against the windings. They melted behind it.
