The revs keep surging up and down regardless of speed or acceleration. At idle they will generally float between 1,200 and 2,000 RPM. On occasion they will drop to 1,000 or slightly below making it rough.

I should point out that this without the AC on.

At steady cruising speed, I can sometimes feel the revs increase and decrease slightly every 2 seconds or so.

I suspect perhaps an oxygen sensor or something.

Where should I start and what am I looking for, and how do I fix it?

Try replacing your fuel filter.

My Vit had bad surging problems because of a blocked fuel filter.

idle air control valve??? = replace

It wont be your oxy sensor, that only measures what spent fuels and air are being sent through the exhuast and responds to the computer

Ok, so where will I find the fuel filter and the Idle Air Control valve on an 08 Jim?

Can I get aftermarket replacements?

Fuel filter looks like a major job. I'd look for other things first.

Why don't I? Well I may, but I thought I might first determine for myself that if I can or cannot fix it myself. If I took that attitude with every problem before I had a investigated, I'd be more broke and nothing would get done.

I guess I must be missing the point of this forum, or any forum for that matter. I take it you have no useful information to offer Steve?

I've had a look through the suzuki service manual for you, they don't diagnose engine issues like this one in the manual unfortunately. It simply refers the technician to do a scan of the engine codes from what I can see. To quote the manual it recommends the techinician consult with the customer, but then immediately scan the ECU for codes as the second step.

I stand corrected, I just flicked through the right page by accident!
Quote from manual:-
"CONDITION:- 'Improper engine idling or engine fails to idle'
POSSIBLE CAUSE:-
Faulty Spark Plug
Leaky or disconnected high tension cord
Faulty ignition coil with ignitor
Fuel pressure out specification
Leaky manifold, throttle body, or cylinder head gasket
Malfunctioning EGR valve
Faulty idle air control system
Faulty evaporative emmision control system
Faulty EGR system
Faulty Fuel injectors
Poor performance of ECT sensor, TP sensor or MAF sensor
Faulty ECM
Loose connection or disconnection of vaccum hoses
Malfunctioning PCV valve
Engine overheating
Low compression
Camshaft position control (VVT) system our of order

(EDITED to reflect the udpated VVT manual)

Note theres some easy ones above that you can do yourself before you take to a mechanic. if you get hold of the full manual like I have and you want to get an oscilliscope and multimeter you can really get into it, the manual tells you everything. You just won't be able to scan the engine so a dealer can find faults quicker I think.

Thanks Squibby. Much appreciaed.

I'll work through the list for anything I can check or fix. I might get an Auto Elec to do a scan hopefully that will give me a dagnosis.

i'd look at the EGR & PCV first seeing it's been on it's side a few times, probably gunked up with oil.

What is and where is the EGR and PCV?

If this was an old Holden, I'd know all the terms and know where everything was :P

Hey Squibby. Where did you get your manual?

Is there a late PDF available? I ony have an older pre VVT one.

The manual is too big for me to host or email to anyone, but you should buy it from tradebit.com cost me $10 or 20 USD. Direct download, about 700mb. I recommend them. I usually get all my manuals free, but the free jimny manuals can be misleading. The one on tradebit was complete and up-to-date. nothing missing.

The only manual 700MB+ is 1995-2007. Has there been any changes since then? Mine is 08

Thats the one matey. No updates since 07. The later 06-07 revisions were for the Diesel jimny and nothing has happened since 07

Once you get the full manual, you will use 99501-81A10-01E manual mostly, thats the late 2004 update covering the 1.3VVT. It was virtually a full re-issue of the manual to cover the new facelift VVT Jimny, that's what you and I have even though ours are 2008 models.

Incidently the VVT jimny is Euro 4 compliant thats why it hasn't changed for so many years. On the down side, if something goes wrong with it its a pain in the butt because there are so many valves and sensors everywhere for emmisions controls.

Spose you want me to type out how to check/fix ALL those listed?????
With the right scan tool I used to be able to watch all happening, but reading 2 sentences on the inerweb's tell's me fuck all...

I do do get quite sick of trying to help people when they don't take my advice or flame me if i'm wrong.

most mechanics should have a diag scanner. just drive on in. its dosnt take long about 10-15mins to diag the problem from the computer and then more time if u want it fixed of course.

and the pcv is on the side of the valve cover at the rear on intake manifold side its a lil plastic one way valve, that releases valve cover pressure back into the intake manifold to be burnt.

and the egr i havnt seen on the jimny cause i havnt looked for it lol but it recycles exhuast gases back into the intake manifold every now and then or something, its for the greenies just reburning exhuast gases to make them less pollutant so rainbows come out your exhuast ha ha ha. but this can sometime trick people into thinking they have a head gasket leak when it is in fact the egr leaking coolant into your manifold. see it all the time on bt50's and pre.

Yeah I've had a diag done a few times on the Jim. I spoke to Darren this morning to confirm he had one. I might head down the tomorrow and get him to test for me, and take it from there.

Have you replaced the broken engine mount?

Ht lead had the top torn off it when we were getting the tipper running again. Plugs had big gaps, have you sorted those yet?

Hey Paul. Nope haven't touched any of that yet. Hoping to get a mount tomorrow.

This problem precedes the Crystal Creek weekend. This issue being noticed didn't seem to coincide with anything special or me having done anything to the engine. First things I considered though.

Was funny, after nearly 3 weeks of Tipper on stands, getting the arms repaired and back in, had to take a trip in to town Friday. It smoked for almost half the distance. Even had one lady honking and pointing at my exhaust. Like I didn't know :P Every time I stopped at lights, the smoke would overtake me.

What is the recommended spark gap for these. Can anyone advise if a different spark plug would make any difference to performance of these engines without ECU mod?

I think your replys read as if you are flaming him actually, for even trying to take a look at it himself. No ones disagreed with you about taking it to a mechanic, but lets be fair, there are at least 5 things on the list that he can check himself. Anyone familiar with their engine can check for leaky vacuum hoses for example. Without hearing your tone of voice, seeing your gestures of facial expressions we can't tell if you are really 'sick of trying' or are just normally that way but the comments you are writing above are making you come across as if you are taking it personally.

I don't think Steve understands the definition of 'advice'.

I have had this discussion many times. When you ask a question in a forum or of more than one person, which I usually do, and you get as many differing answers, which will usually be the case, all but 1 person is going to be upset if you don't take 'their advice'.

So to save you any future dissappointment Steve. I will understand if YOU don't offer me any 'help' from this point on.

Paul. Thanks for that info. I'll pull the plugs and clean up and check the gaps before I try anything else. Perhaps I have caked an exhaust sensor in oil :P
